Sagaponack General Store, which is home to the hamlet’s sole post office, is for sale.
Located at 542 Sagaponack Main Street in Sagaponack, the property is listed for $3.995 million. The building was constructed in 1878 and it has remained in the Hildreth/Thayer family for over 100 years.
“This iconic and Historic General Store and Post Office is on the market for the first time in over 100 years,” Brown Harris Stevens’ Susan Ratcliffe, the listing agent, said.
Currently, the site is home to Pierre’s Market – an outpost of the popular Pierre’s restaurant in Bridgehampton, as well as the post office. “The Sagaponack General Store, currently Pierre’s Market, was built in 1878 for the sole purpose of a general store and post office for the hamlet of Sagaponack, once named the most exclusive zip code in the country,” Ratcliffe relayed.
“This property has been part of the social fabric of Sagaponack life for more than a century, even as the landscape changed from rural farming community to one of the most expensive enclaves in America,” Ashley S. Murphy, Brown Harris Stevens Senior Vice President of Communications and longtime Sagaponack resident, noted.” It’s an important meeting ground not only for summer crowds but also for year-round residents – this is where we come to check mail, grab coffee, and catch up with friends and neighbors. It’s an incredibly rare opportunity to buy a true piece of Sagaponack history.”
