Immersive and cinematic, WATERPROOF is the compelling story of a community’s crusade to create a safe swimming environment in East Hampton. Led by the larger than life Big John Ryan and his heroic son, Johnny Jr. These two tenacious watermen gave the best of themselves to create East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue; a unique on-call 24/7 year-round team of lifeguards, committed to protecting unguarded beaches from Wainscott to Montauk. The 85 strong dedicated members train rigorously, compete and ultimately ensure the safety of locals and tourists alike on the East End of Long Island. There will be two screenings on Sunday, December 5th at the Sag Harbor Cinema. You’ll meet Big John and the Hampton Lifeguard Association.
WATERPROOF premiered at the Hampton Film Festival 2019 and is currently on the Film Festival Circuit. It has won numerous awards including; Best Short Documentary at Cannes Shorts, Best Short Documentary at Beaufort International Film Festival, The Los Angeles Independent Shorts Award, The Excellence Award at California’s Best Shorts Competition, as well as Best Activism Award and Spirit Award at Toronto Beaches International Film Festival, Winner of 2021 Tokyo & Venice Film Festivals.
