New year, new me? I know that saying is highly overused, and the pressures of ‘getting back on track’ after the holiday season can be debilitating. But, when broken down to its most basic intention, the start of the new year can be seen as a clean slate to begin prioritizing yourself and the goals you’ve been meaning to achieve.
In an effort to decrease any overwhelming feelings that may arise as we move further into January, I’ve created a guide to tackling your New Year’s resolutions– Hamptons style.
Health and Fitness:
Whether you need a push to start those daily beach walks or want to try a new fitness class, there is something here for everyone. I know how scary it can be to try something new, but we grow as humans when living outside our comfort zone.
I’ve been hearing rave reviews over The Formula X Meredith, an all-in-one workout class created by Southampton local Meredith Shumway. Check out our previous article on The Formula here.
Within the last few years, Hamptons Hot Yoga has opened a location in Southampton and Montauk, expanding its accessibility throughout our community. Hot Yoga is a great option for those of all ages!
An app called “Class Pass,” normally utilized by those living in larger cities, has recently become practical here in the Hamptons. Class Pass is a one-stop app that allows you to pay one monthly membership to have access to a variety of different fitness options, salons and spas. So, if you’re a lover of integrating all different kinds of workouts into your week, Class Pass is a great option.
Cold plunging has taken social media by storm, and physicians say the benefits go beyond physical. Taking the plunge into icy waters originally started as a way for athletes to combat muscle soreness post-workout. As of recently, it’s been cited to help boost your metabolism, mood, and immunity. Check out our recent article on cold plunging and how to prepare yourself for icy waters. If you’re not interested in a saltwater plunge, a few places offer plunging studios here on the east end. Check out The Recovery Lounge in Bridgehampton, Shou Sugi Ban House in Water Mill, or Hamptons Float in Water Mill.
Hobbies:
We all need them, whether you believe me or not. It’s so easy to get stuck in the cycle of waking up, going to work, coming home, sleeping, and repeating. Re-integrating your favorite activities into your schedule is the perfect start to combating the quotidian routine.
Instead of scrolling through your phone or computer before bed, crack open that book on your nightstand, collecting dust. Reading before bed has been found to help you fall asleep faster and sleep better altogether. Book Hampton in East Hampton, Southampton Book, and Sag Harbor books have a great, up-to-date selection of our generation’s greatest writers. Looking for an eco-friendly way to kick-start your reading hobby? Our local libraries are always available for book rentals and are a fun way to get your kids involved and excited about reading.
Do you miss playing team sports the way you did when you were in high school and college? There are plenty of adult leagues out here on the east end. Check out Southampton Youth Services (SYS) in the North Sea, and they often host leagues or ‘open gyms’. There are also a number of Facebook groups to join for more information on adult sporting leagues in the Hamptons.
Making Time for all of those in your life, including yourself:
I recently learned that the Southampton Cultural Center offers life-drawing classes with live models and instruction by local artists. What a great activity for you and a friend.
Break out your and your partner’s dancing shoes because the Southampton Cultural Center also offers a Cuban Salsa Dancing Class. How fun?
Try a new recipe, a new restaurant, a new class. Wölffer Estate Vineyard offers a “Great Wines of the World” dinner with Maison Louis Jadot Winemaker Frédéric Barnier. This event is a four-course “wine dinner” with food pairings and a great way to taste and learn about “quality-driven wineries.” Check out Wölffer Estate Vineyard’s website for more information.
Happy belated New Year to you and yours! It’s never too late to start on those New Year’s resolutions or try something different. Here’s to making 2024 your year, whatever that may mean for you.
