Dennis Morris and Manifold Editions will be releasing a limited edition photo from Morris’ time with The Sex Pistols in the 1970s at the international art festival, ArtHamptons, which runs July 11 through 14, 2013. His photo, “SiD,” captures Sid Vicious at a puzzling time in his punk career before his suicide in 1979.
“I think the time is right,” Morris said. “The interest in punk is really popular now and evident now.”
Morris first emerged in the music scene at age 16 when Bob Marley asked him to photograph his band. His photos graced the covers of Time Out and Melody Maker before his 17th birthday.
“That meeting was very, very important,” Morris said. “It was basically the start of my career in photography.”
Soon Johnny Rotten of The Sex Pistols asked Morris to follow the band on tour, serving as the band’s official photographer. Still a teenager, he took some of the most recognizable images of the punk band that rocked the 70’s.
“If there are four members of the band, you have to be the fifth member of the band,” Morris said when asked the secret to shooting photos of musicians.
Since The Sex Pistols broke up in 1978, Morris has taken photos of bands like Bush, Oasis, The Stone Roses and The Prodigy.
