Recent paintings by Chuck Close including, archival watercolor pigment prints on Hahnemühle rag paper, and jacquard tapestries of artists and friends including Roy Lichtenstein, Lou Reed, Cindy Sherman, and Kara Walker will be on view at Guild Hall starting on Saurday, August 10 through Monday, October 14.
Close is known for his highly inventive techniques used to paint the human face, aiming to paint people the way a camera would see them. His first retrospective was in 1981 at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and his work can be found in museums as well as private collections worldwide.
A part-time resident of the East End for more than 40 years, Close received the Guild Hall Academy of the Arts Lifetime Achievement Award in the Visual Arts in 1995. His one-person exhibition “Chuck Close Up Close” of Polaroid photographs was on display at Guild Hall in 1991.
