The Watermill Center is now accepting applicants for its 2017 International Summer Program which runs July 17 through August 19, 2017. The Water Mill-based arts compound provides an unparalleled platform for collaboration, innovation, and creation, and up to 100 artists from over 30 countries find inspiration at the eight-and-a-half acre site yearly.
International Summer Program participants will be provided with the unique opportunity to intimately observe and participate in the artistic process guided by Artistic Director Robert Wilson, who has led this program for more than two decades. Artists will also work closely with his highly qualified staff of accomplished professionals, all from different artistic backgrounds. Participants will spend up to five weeks on Long Island refining their practice, expanding perspectives, and forming lasting relationships with other artists from around the world.

“With the opening of the application process for the International Summer Program 2017, the Watermill Center staff eagerly anticipates the arrival of returning and new artist participants from around the globe,” remarked Elka Rifkin, Director of the Watermill Center. “In its 26th year, the International Summer Program brings together approximately 80 artists from more than 30 countries – and from a variety of disciplines in the visual and performing arts – to work alongside artistic visionary and theater director Robert Wilson for what is certain to be yet another unforgettable summer.”
Artists will receive access to extensive resources that are central to the Watermill experience: daily meetings with Wilson, lectures on subjects including theater, opera innovation, installation, design, science, and opportunities to propose and develop new work for public presentation during the annual Watermill Summer Benefit and Discover Watermill Day. Participants will also have access to theater production archives, an extensive physical and digital library, and the highly personal and eclectic Watermill Collection of art objects and artifacts. In addition, artists are encouraged to audition for Wilson’s summer staging rehearsals and participate in workshops with his collaborators, as well as network with the local-art-supporting community.
Individual artists, students, or artistic professionals from all disciplines, backgrounds, and cultures who are interested in participating in a collaborative environment contributing to workshops of new international productions and exhibitions are encouraged to apply. Makeup artists, costume designers and fabricators, architects, electricians, carpenters, graphic artists, and videography and theater technicians are also invited to apply.
