Nawa Axis For Peace Project Comes To LongHouse Reserve

The LongHouse Reserve opened a new exhibit in its sculpture garden called Nawa Axis for Peace, a rope sculpture by Japanese environmental artist Mariyo Yagi that was collaboratively created and installed by over 100 people. The exhibit opened on Saturday May 31, 2014 and will remain at the LongHouse Reserve through 2017.

Mariyo, an internationally acclaimed artist with various prestigious awards, believes that rope symbolizes all realms of life and in its spiral form, signifies interconnectedness. In Japanese, “Na” means “you” and “Wa” means “I,” signifying a binding together of people and diversity in the spirit of world peace.

The rope sculptures have become increasingly popular as they represent a creative form of art while also offering people to be involved in and inspired by a collaborative public event. The opening reception drew a crowd of residents from New York communities as well as past Nawa Axis for Peace participants.
