“The exhibition, ‘Audacity of Abstraction,’ comprises works by five diverse artists, Shari Abramson, Gerson Leiber, Dennis Leri, Roy Nicholson, and Dan Welden, each giving personal vision to the theme,” Arlene Bujese, curator of the exhibit.
On Tuesday, April 14th, Southampton Cultural Center is debuting their newest exhibit, “Audacity of Abstraction,” which refers to the process wherein the artist marks the surface, or assembles elements, using mediums of choice with the purpose of creating a painting, drawing, or sculpture. The work is fundamentally conceptual, spontaneous, and non-objective, often leaving the viewer with an immediate or measured response, which might affirm or question the aesthetics of this work.
“Audacity of Abstraction” features paintings by Shari Abramson that have an illusionistic quality, where soft edged shapes materialize from ethereal, monochromatic grounds. Bold colors are combined in planes in Gerson Leiber’s work. Roy Nicholson’s “Toxic Garden” series include “re-natured” shapes inferring essential nature. Subdued shades portray strong shapes in Dan Welden’s painting. Dennis Leri’s sculpture series include welded, painted steel in geometric and curvilinear forms, with balance being a crucial element.
“Audacity of Abstraction” will be on display at Levitas Gallery at Southampton Cultural Center through Monday, May 18th. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, April 18th from 4 to 6 p.m.
