70s Vibes Captured In “Right On! The Lennon Years”

East Hampton Historical Society’s newest exhibition will send guests on a walk down memory lane as they admire photographs taken by Susan Wood during the 70s. Some of the more iconic images in the exhibit feature The Beatles’ John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono.

The exhibit, titled “Right On! The Lennon Years, Photographs by Susan Wood 1968 – 1978,” will debut during an opening reception on Saturday, August 8th from 4 to 7 p.m.

“I came of age in Ireland looking at images of New York in the 1970s: the mood, the clothes, the films, and TV series,” Deirdre Brennan, the curator of the exhibit, said. “In curating Susan’s work, I wanted to show the breadth of the subject matter Susan has covered, and of course to include the years that she photographed John and Yoko — the Lennon years.” She noted that Wood’s work is synonymous with the 1970s.

The photographer’s work captures different art icons of the time, as well as fashions and cultures that we still appreciate today. Through the photographs, exhibit visitors will take away a taste of the times and a feel for this decade in history. “Right On! The Lennon Years, Photographs by Susan Wood 1968 – 1978” marks the first time that this collection of photographs will be show together. Some of the other well-known portraits include Maud Adams, a Swedish actress popular at the time, and Tom Wolfe, the pioneering American author and journalist.

Wood’s photography has appeared in Vogue, People and New York Magazine, to name a few. In addition to her well-known pictures of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, she is also known for her portraits of celebrities like Susan Sontag, and Diane von Furstenberg, and her candid photos of political personalities and notable names from the arts community.

“This exhibition exposes us to fashion, music, literature, and eccentrics (be they famous or not) that create an environment of photographs that become a narrative of the times,” shared Richard Barons, Director of the East Hampton Historical Society. “And what makes it even more alluring is that it will be on display for the first time in an authentic 17th-century barn, at one of the oldest farmsteads on Long Island.”

“Right On! The Lennon Years, Photographs by Susan Wood 1968 – 1978” will be on display through Sunday, October 18th.
