Royce Weatherly Exhibition To Debut During “Discover Watermill Day”

The Watermill Center will be presenting Looking Slowly: 30 Years of Painting, the first-ever survey of paintings by American artist Royce Weatherly, on Sunday, August 13 as part of Discover Watermill Day. It will remain on view through Wednesday, October 11, by appointment only, or during The Center’s public programs.

“The Watermill Center has been a long time admirer Royce Weatherly’s work,” noted The Watermill Center Curator Noah Khoshbin. “Following the last two mixed media painting exhibitions by Noel McKenna and William Stewart, we are looking forward to exhibiting Royce’s extremely focused and methodical works. Royce’s exhibition will be followed by his fall residency at The Center as an Inga Maren Otto Fellow.”

Royce Weatherly is an American painter from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The 2015 Guggenheim Grant recipient received his BA from Wake Forest University and MFA from the University of Wisconsin/Madison. Over the years he has developed a simple yet mysterious painting style.

Weatherly was also awarded the Center’s Inga Maren Otto Fellowship and over the course of three decades has produced just a few dozen works.
Looking Slowly: 30 Years of Painting includes 15 paintings and photographs that span from 1995 to the present. These works highlight the evolution of the artist’s signature practice. Weatherly examines subtle subject matter common to this North Carolina upbringing (cigarette wrappers, lighters, potatoes, black walnuts, etc.) and clearly presents them to the viewer without comment or a narrative suggestion.

The Inga Maren Otto Fellowship was created with a generous gift from philanthropist Inga Maren Otto and provides support for visual artists who have demonstrated exceptional creative ability in the arts.

Discover Watermill Day provides a chance for the public to explore the Center’s eight-and-a-half acres of beautifully landscaped grounds freely as they take in site-specific installations and performances. Admission is free and Discover Watermill Day will be held from 3 to 6 p.m.

The Watermill Center was founded in 1992 by Robert Wilson and is an interdisciplinary laboratory for the arts that supports young and emerging artists through many programs including its year round Artist Residency Program and International Summer Program.
