The Boo-Hooray Summer Rental gallery, curated by Johan Kugelberg, is not only returning to Montauk, but it’s reopening in a larger location.
“I started Boo-Hooray ten years ago as a means of working with the kind of 20th century cultural residue that I felt needed representation in museums and academic libraries. The books we publish, and the rare books and artworks we deal in I think provide a broader picture of American culture and creativity, both underground and mainstream,” Kugelberg – who co-owns the gallery with his wife, Dr. Lila Wolfe – explained. “We had such a great response last season that we wanted to expand to this new location.”

Wearing Buttons Is Not Enough will debut in June. |
The Hamptons summer pop up of the Manhattan gallery will launch with I Know What You Did Last Summer, a reflection on the 2017 season featuring downtown artist Jane Dickson, West Coast artist Jody Uttal, filmmaker Jonas Mekas, Baron von Fancy, and Pat McCarthy of Satan Ceramics. The exhibition will be on view Saturday, May 26 through Friday, June 8.
Additionally, the Montauk outpost will feature curated shows from artists like Alan Vega, Carl Johan de Geer, Jack Smith, Dash Snow and Erik Foss, as well as Wearing Buttons Is Not Enough, an exhibition of protest buttons curated by Kugelberg and his daughter Sofia Leilani that debuted at famed Parisian retailer Colette.
“As a teenager, I think these buttons are amazing and inspirational,” Leilani noted. “It makes you want to get involved and active to make a change!”
Wearing Buttons Is Not Enough encompasses a spectacular array of activist buttons from the 1950s through 1970s collected by Garrick Beck. The exhibition will premiere on Saturday, June 9 and remain on view through Friday, June 22.
“It was amazing to see my daughter structure and stage this show at Colette – all the creativity was hers, including the design and editorial of the catalogue and the merchandise!” Kugelberg added. “Sofia had been to many of my Colette events over the years so it was a great feeling to have her make her curatorial debut there before the store closed for good.”
To commemorate the reopening, Kugelberg and Dr. Wolfe will host an opening reception for I Know What You Did Last Summer on Saturday, May 26 from 6 to 8 p.m.
The Boo-Hooray Summer Rental will be open daily, from 12 to 6 p.m.
