The holiday weekend at the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill will encompass award-winning films from around the world – for both adults and children, a holiday pop up, exhibitions, and more.
On Friday, November 29, Breath, an official selection at the 2018 Toronto and Seattle International Film Festivals, will screen at 6 p.m. The coming of age surf movie, based on the award-winning, international best-selling novel by Tim Winton, is the directorial debut of Simon Baker, who is also featured in the film and was named Best Supporting Actor in the 2018 AACTA Awards. Set in the 1970s, Breath revolves around two teenage boys, Pikelet (Samson Coulter) and Loonie (Ben Spence), who live in a remote corner of the Western Australian coast. The duo befriend Sando (Simon Baker), a surfer and adventurer that challenges the boys to take risks.
“I am pleased to continue the Parrish’s tradition to screen a surf movie over the Thanksgiving holiday, which resonates with our surfing community as well as those who just love the thrill of watching it,” Corinne Erni, Senior Curator of ArtsReach and Special Projects, reflected.
On Saturday, November 30, the Parrish will present two films from the New York International Children’s Film Festival (NYICCF). Kid Flicks One, which is recommended for ages 3 to 7 (60 minutes), will screen first at 1 p.m., followed by Viva Kid Flicks, Spanish language films with English subtitles suitable for ages 7 and older (65 minutes), at 2 p.m.
“We always look forward to our annual collaboration with the NYICFF which provides us with dynamic, beautifully rendered films that resonate with children and adults,” added Jillian Bock, Assistant Director of Education at the Parrish. “Kid Flicks gives us the special opportunity to introduce our audiences to wildly creative filmmakers from all around the globe.”
Kid Flicks One will feature an international lineup of live-action and animated shorts created by filmmakers from, Australia, Colombia, France, Guatemala, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland, and the U.S. Viva Kid Flicks will include animated, documentary, and live action films that take viewers to Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Spain, and the U.S.
