Juried Hamptons Exhibition To Explore “All The Places We Go”

Anyone with a case of wanderlust will want to check out The White Room Gallery’s latest exhibition, All the Places We Go.

“The theme of this exhibit came from a desire to showcase the collective exploration of spirit whether it be a literal interpretation as in sitting atop a skyscraper to capture the perfect, albeit terrifying, photograph or symbolic with a look into the musings of an abstract painter or a humorous illustrator,” Andrea McCafferty and Kat O’Neill, Co-Owners & Directors, relayed. “We try to do at least one juried exhibit a year to offer artists a platform to not only have their work shown but to meet other creatives. With all the negative places the world has gone of late it’s nice to celebrate the positive.”

The exhibition will encompass works from Steve Haweeli, Setha Low, Dorothy Ganek, David Bender, Kevin Casey, Ted Stamelos, James Slezak, Anthony D’Avino, Phil Marco, LuAnn Thompson, Laurie Devault, Wiliam Taylor, Berges Alvarez, Maureen Pouder, Susan Richardson, Joanne Handler, Brian Craig, Joel Lefkowitz, Linda Reville Eisenberg, Jack Flo, Laura Benjamin, Donna Corvi, Louis Puglisi, Neva Setlow, Jim Molloy, Jim Sabiston, Karen Kirshner, Christina Stow, Alan Katz, Linda Sirow, Ephraim Wuensch, Sigrid Owen, Jodiann Fasano, Alicia Gitlitz, Leonardo the Fabulous, Martha McAleer, Keith Ramsdell, John Mazlish, Joe Pallister, Francisco Rizquez, Mathew Smith and John Fasano.

Some found inspiration locally. “Hicks Island is my ode to the now defunct ‘island’ out in Napeague across from Lazy Point,” Haweeli shared. “The painting evokes, summer days in the boat with my son, crashing through waves on Gardiner’s Bay as we headed to our destination, where we would lay up for a lazy afternoon fishing and exploring.”

“The piece that was selected for the All the Places We Go exhibit at The White Room Gallery was previously in a juried show themed juxtaposition. I like the sound of the word juxtaposition and I like the notion of pairing contrasting or unexpected elements in an image,” Slezak shared. “The inferno-like background is just a particularly vibrant and intense sunset here in Hampton Bays. The angel is a statue in the Good Ground Cemetery. Using Photo Shop I selected most but not all of the angel and added this on top of the intense sunset. The partial selection makes the weighty stone statue a bit ethereal. I think that the juxtaposition of heavenly and hellish makes the image visually interesting. Let’s hope that this is not really one of the places we go!”

“These two works are part of a series that explores the mystical and seemingly elusive experience of being in the city. Usually understood through its grid of streets, buildings and high technology, these pieces depict a dreamy vision of blurred images and moving figures in contrast to a greener hinterland,” Low said about her two featured watercolor works. “I painted these ‘places’ as viewed through a mist of memory and nostalgia. The varying intensities of color evoke the layers of perception and depths of meaning that characterize urban life.”

All the Places We Go will open on Friday, March 6 and remain on display through Sunday, April 5. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, March 7 from 5 to 7 p.m.

The White Room is located at 2415 Montauk Highway/Main Street in Bridgehampton. For more information, call 631-237-1481 or visit www.thewhiteroom.gallery.
