Sylvester Manor is kicking off 2020 with a beloved post-holiday Shelter Island tradition: the Education Farm’s annual January Bluegrass show. This year’s Sylvester Manor Concert Series will launch with Brooklyn’s Damn Tall Buildings.
“We are thrilled that Damn Tall Buildings will be kicking off Sylvester Manor’s 2020 Concert Series at our annual Bluegrass show on January 18,” Alice Clark, Sylvester Manor’s Event Planner, noted.
The concert will be held at the Shelter Island School from 7:30 to 10 p.m.
“From infectious spirit to their churning rhythm section to their tight – but not too polished – harmonies, Damn Tall Buildings brings energetic fun to every performance! The Boston Globe wrote of them, ‘Think of: The Carter family for the millennial generation. Old Crow Medicine Show meets Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros meets Flatt and Scruggs meets Nickel Creek, with a dash of Avett Brothers and a sprinkle of Johnny Cash. What could be better than that to warm up a cold January night?'”
In 2013, while attending Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Avery Ballotta (fiddle), Jordan Alleman (banjo), Max Capistran (vocals and lyrics), and Sasha Dubyk (vocals) decided to jam together on the streets, amusing passerbys with old bluegrass and blues songs, as well as traditional fiddle tunes. They gelled as a group and eventually their sets evolved to include their own original music.
Damn Tall Buildings has released a trio of album: Cure-All, Damn Tall Buildings, and Don’t Look Down. The band has toured widely and graced the stage at festivals like Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, Philadelphia Folk Festival, and Freshgrass Festival, where they earned second place in the 2016 band competition. The band’s songs “find beauty and glory in the mundane, workaday struggle of everyday life.”
“Even if bluegrass isn’t normally your cup of tea, you can’t help but be amazed by the way this band plays. And who knows? Maybe this could be the bluegrass album to win you over,” Americana Highways noted.
Tickets to Sylvester Manor’s Concert Series featuring Damn Tall Buildings start at $30.
