The Water Mill Museum Quilts Up For Annual Show And Sale

The Water Mill Museum is hosting their 27th annual Quilt Show and Sale on Friday, August 16, through Sunday, September 15. This year’s proceeds will go towards the museum’s restoration of their 1644 grist mill, as it has in years past.

“Some of them are from private people who make quilts all year,” said Ann Lombardo, a spokeswoman for the museum. “Others are from [people] sort of like collectors and dealers in a way.”

200 quilts (taking up two floors in total) will be up for grabs with prices ranging from under $50 to around $800. There are quilts of all sizes from baby vintage to queen-size.

This year, the museum exhibits will also be open during the quilt show and there is now a refreshed outdoor garden.

The museum, itself, saw 5.5 feet of water in its basement during Hurricane Sandy last year. The staff, which is basically all volunteers, have been working to restore the property and will be finishing up before the sale.

In addition, the museum is on a 10-year plan to restore its three buildings, a chore that requires opening up the walls and replacing the beams that support the structure in the same way as colonial times.

“People are welcome just to come and look at the quilts and ask questions about them and enjoy the handcrafted patterns, colors and shapes,” Lombardo said. “The different craft patterns that the quilts come in are fascinating.”
