On Friday, April 1st, Westhampton Free Library is planning a knockout of a program when they present Dine and Discuss with film historian Clive Young. Starting at 6 p.m., the movie buff will explore the far-reaching impact of Rocky, as well as all of the sports drama’s sequels.
“Our community stays on top of current events and culture,” explained Nola Thacker, Westhampton Free Library Program Coordinator. “We have had big turnouts for similar programs such as a look at the influence of Star Wars and the impact of the release of Go Set A Watchman, so the Rocky arc was a natural choice.”
Whether you’ve seen the 1976 classic or not, chances are you’re familiar with the iconic scene where Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) runs up the Art Museum’s flight of stairs or when Rocky yells “Adrian!” Directed by John G. Avildsen, the film was written by and starred Stallone. It took home the Oscar for Best Picture and spawned six sequels including Rocky II (1979), Rocky III (1982), Rocky IV (1985), Rocky V (1990), Rocky Balboa (2006), and most recently, Creed (2015), which starred Michael B. Jordan and Stallone. The latest installment received acclaim from critics and earned Stallone a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, as well as a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture.

As the film is set in Philadelphia, the Library is featuring a staple from the area. “We’re including dinner in the event and one of the items on the menu will definitely be a Philly cheese steak pizza,” added Thacker.
