Looking for an entertaining way to escape the summer heat? Catch a screening during Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center’s popular summer film series.

The Center will present a new, critically acclaimed film every Tuesday through Thursday, beginning July 10 through the end of August.

Andrew Botsford returns for Tuesday Nights at the Movies with Andrew, where he introduces each film and hosts an informal discussion at the conclusion of each showing. Special guest commentators are known to attend.

The viewing commence with Tully, directed by Jason Reitman, which highlights mother of three Marlo (Charlize Theron) who is gifted a night nanny by her brother. Marlo, though hesitant at first, comes to form a unique bond with the young nanny, Tully. Film Journal International called it “A bitingly funny, deeply empathetic ode to motherhood.” Variety said “Charlize Theron gives a fearless performance as a woman snowed under by motherhood.” Tully can be seen Tuesday, July 10 through Thursday, July 12.

Tuesday, July 17 and through Thursday, July 19 will bring A Kid Like Jake. The film stars Claire Danes and Jim Parsons who play a Brooklyn couple rethinkining their roles as parents and spouses when their four year old son’s preschool teacher points out that his non gender conforming tendencies might be more than a phase. Directed by Silas Howard, The Wall Street Journal called it “A daring drama with a heavyweight cast, a gracefully delivered message and a hellish problem — specifically, other people.” Slate Magazine said the film is “An authentic, conversational messiness we rarely see on screen.”

On Tuesday, July 24 through Thursday, July 26, Damsel, a film about the Wild West, will screen. Robert Pattinson plays Samuel Alabaster, an affluent pioneer, who ventures across the frontier to marry Penelope (Mia Wasikowska). As the journey continues, it becomes more difficult to determine the difference between hero, villain and damsel. “The film is unpredictable and bizarre, stunningly beautiful and weird in the best ways…” said Entertainment Weekly.

Finally, Tuesday, July 31 through Thursday, August 2 will feature Sammy Davis Jr.: I Gotta Be Me, directed by Sam Pollard and written by Laurence Maslon. The film highlights the career of Sammy Davis Jr. and shows the hardships he encountered in terms of racial prejudice and the shifting political territory. Featuring interviews from Tony Bennett, Quincy Jones, Billy Crystal, Norman Lear, Jerry Lewis, Whoopi Goldberg and more, the documentary also includes photographs from Davis’ personal collection and excerpts from his electric performances in television, film and concert. “Consistently describes an ambitious talent always reaching for the top, but also a man plagued by insecurity, who remained sadly unsure of his own value,” lauded The Hollywood Reporter.

Each screening will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center is located at 76 Main Street in Westhampton Beach. For more information and tickets, visit whbpac.org or call the Box Office at 631-288-1500.

  • Traffic in the Hamptons is Time Sensitive

Traffic in the Hamptons is time sensitive. Going east from 6 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and west from 4 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. has become quite an ordeal. The initial expansion of “Highway 39” back around 2006-2007, in which the two-lane road was expanded to four and in some places six lanes, no longer is alleviating the traffic flow.

  • Sixty/Something: Solid Gold Rent

My first full-time year in the Hamptons started as a weekend and lasted a decade. I paid rent to a host of folks thinking I’d be moving back to NYC. Somehow the east end helped me transition to a very happily remarried east end guy.

This tale all started with me, a divorced dad having a fateful ride to Joe Shaw’s home as a favor to pick up a deposit on his sailboat. That day ended with me buying his sailboat. It was an on the spot spur of the moment epiphany moment. I knew nothing about sailboats or east end bays.

  • Bideawee Animal Rescue: “Stay Awhile”

It’s been more than two years since the start of the pandemic where there was a significant increase in animal adoptions, known as the “pandemic puppy craze.” Now, animal shelters across the country have been experiencing a lull in adoptions.

Bideawee is one of the country’s oldest and most respected animal welfare and pet adoption organizations. They have locations in New York City, Wantagh, and Westhampton, and they are encouraging the community to consider bringing a deserving and lovable pet into their home. @bideawee
