Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor will launch its 2017 Mainstage Season with the world premiere of The Man in the Ceiling, which can be seen from Tuesday, May 30 through Sunday, June 25.
The Man in the Ceiling was featured in last year’s New Works Festival at Bay Street. The musical revolves around Jimmy Jibbett, a boy cartoonist who is ignored by his father because he doesn’t play like a real boy and swept aside by his mother who is too busy worrying about her brother, Lester. As a result, Jimmy turns to the characters that he creates for support until one day he discovers something that will change him and his family forever.
The production will star Jonah Broscow as Jimmy Jibbett, Andrew Lippa as Uncle Lester, Erin Kommor as Lisi, Brett Gray as Charlie Beemer, Danny Binstock as Father and Nicole Parker as Mother.
“I am thrilled this new musical will open the 2017 Mainstage Season at Bay Street, continuing to affirm our deep commitment to the production of new works for the stage,” says Artistic Director Scott Schwartz, “Jules Feiffer, Andrew Lippa and Jeffrey Seller are renowned theater artists, and all of us at Bay Street so look forward to working with them as they create this world premiere.”
The Man in the Ceiling was adapted from a book written by Jules Feiffer. It features music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and is directed by Jeffrey Seller.
Feiffer, who resides on the East End, has won a number of prizes for his works including the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning. Feiffer’s works include The Phantom Tollbooth, A Barrel of Laughs and Carnal Knowledge.
Lippa recently released a new song, Evil Like Me, for the Disney movie Descendants, which hit the top spot on both the iTunes and Billboard soundtrack charts and has over 27 million views on YouTube. He also wrote music and lyrics for the Broadway musical The Addams Family.
Seller has won four Tony-Awards for best musical including, Rent and Hamilton. He is the only producer to have produced two Pulitzer Prize-winning musicals and is currently developing a television series with NBC Universal as well as a new musical based on the life and music of Cher.
