The World Premiere of Jack Canfora’s Fellow Travelers will launch Bay Street Theater and Sag Harbor Center for the Arts’ 2018 Mainstage Season.
Fellow Travelers will shed light on the complex relationship between a trio of American icons: actress Marilyn Monroe, writer Arthur Miller, and director Elia Kazan.
“This play is about giants of the stage and screen, larger than life personalities who made great art and a great impact on our American culture,” shared Bay Street Theater’s Artistic Director Scott Schwartz. “It is a searing portrait of extraordinary people struggling with the politics of their time and their love for one another, and I can’t wait to see how this cast and creative team brings their story to vivid life.”
Set at a time when the wrong affiliation could easily put an end to a Hollywood career, the play will explore not only the glitz and glamour of the film industry, but also how the McCarthy era impacted the trio’s friendship during Hollywood’s notorious blacklist period.
Wayne Alan Wilcox (Gilmore Girls, The Normal Heart, Rent, Chaplin) will star as Arthur Miller, Vince Nappo (The Last Tycoon, Friends with Kids, Million Dollar Quartet) will play Elia Kazan, Rachel Spencer Hewitt (Return to the Hiding Place, A Civil War Christmas) will take on the role of Marilyn Monroe, Mark Blum (Mozart in the Jungle, Amy and the Orphans, The Best Man) will play Harry Cohn, and Jeffery Bean (Bells are Ringing, Amadeus) will take on the roles of Roy Brewer/Kermit Bloomgarden.
Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award winner Michael Wilson will direct.
“We are thrilled to welcome such an exceptional team of artists to Bay Street for the world premiere of Jack Canfora’s Fellow Travelers,” Schwartz added.
Fellow Travelers can be seen Tuesday, May 29 through Sunday, June 17. Opening night will be a “Pay What You Can” performance.
