Like the never ending waves that lap the beach, Jimmy Minardi has a never ending enthusiasm for fitness. When you take one look at him, you can actually feel his positive energy. He is one of those guys that just radiates. A local to East Hampton, a lifeguard for life and current East Hampton Village Lifeguard Chief, he’s a fixture at Main Beach in the summer time.
His passion for lifeguarding has fueled his business, Minardi Training, and the bread and butter of Minardi training is the Minardi Beach workout. What is the Minardi Beach workout? Well, in essence, it’s an unbelievably fun and challenging workout on the beach by the jetty at Main Beach. Jimmy is a big believer in heart rate monitoring, and each exercise is essentially a fun obstacle course on the beach that gets your heart going fast, and includes pivoting between cones, jumping over and crawling under obstacles and of course a constant yelling of encouragement from Jimmy Minardi himself as he runs his “athletes.”
If you are looking for something different, fun and a great workout, you just found it with the Minardi Beach workout. It starts out something like this. You show up at Main Beach and take a deep breath of the salt air and meet Jimmy and his huge smile and wrap around Maui Jim sunglasses. Then you head down to the Jetty where a custom obstacle course gets set up and you get to work with the rest of the group. Since you are outdoors on the water, a whole new element is added to the workout. You feel more connected to your body and you feel more connected to nature.
In many ways, it just feels natural. I’ve done the workout many times, and out of every exercise class I’ve ever done, I have the best time and feel the most at peace at the end of the workout when I work out with Jimmy Minardi. Maybe it has something to do with jumping in the ocean at the end of the workout, maybe it has to do with the camaraderie, or maybe it just has to do with Jimmy Minardi’s passion and enthusiasm for fitness, health, the ocean, lifeguarding and life.
If you’re looking for something new and fun, the Minardi Beach workout is without question something you should add to your list. It’s unique to the Hamptons, it’s healthy for body and spirit, and it’s one of the best ways to start off your day that I can think of.
