Although the season of swim is officially over, Crush Curatorial is inviting you to join them this Columbus Day weekend for one last metaphorical autumnal dip during Hope Floats, a basin-based exhibition of 15 artists who dive deep into just what it means to be “soggy, drenched, soaked-to-the bone yet hopeful.”

“We are both really excited about the exhibition, as we have done a number of expanded shows, from exhibitions in 40′ fishing nets in the Atlantic Ocean to a hotel in North Korea,” said Patrick Mohundro who co-curated the exhibition. “It is well established that the white cube is not a neutral backdrop for art, though it does often make paintings and objects look stunning. But we wonder what other environments might highlight the work of our favorite artists? What about the wet, blue cube?”
The exhibition will showcase the works of Su Jung Chang, James Chrzan, Allison Brainard, Sam Cockrell, Olivia Coeln, Ray Ferreira, Marysia Gacek, Ilana Yacine Harris-Babou, David Humphrey, Emily Janowick, Christine Navin, Zara Pfeifer, Ana Popescu, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Ben Thorp Brown.
“We love the water, we love art. It seems natural to put the two together,” Mohundro added. “The context of an autumnal pool show has helped lend to the somber conversation we find ourselves in (especially after the past week) but is hopeful, presenting the freedoms art can provide as a solution or a means to rethink the moment.”
As for what for Mohundro hopes attendees takeaway from the show, he says Chang sums it up perfectly in her poem which is featured below and will also be highlighted during Hope Floats:
for those of you who can open your eyes in water
I’ve got just a minute
to talk to you in here
I’ve never enjoyed
swimming
because it felt too leisurely
and leisure was never recommended
in the society in which I grew up.
I never went for a swim
because I wanted to have control
over my body
the way it is shown
how much to reveal
and where to cover
today
I enjoy swimming
with my eyes open
my eyes will
get red after a minute
and people won’t know
I cry under
water.
Hope Floats will be on display Saturday, October 6 from 3 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, October 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The opening reception will take place on Saturday from 3 to 8 p.m.
