Bay Street Theater is thrilled to announce an exciting exhibition celebrating Black History Month in its lobby gallery. Titled “Regional Artists Explore Afrofuturism,” this exclusive showcase is open to the public and completely free of charge. Co-curated by Dr. Georgette Grier-Key and Michael A. Butler in collaboration with Bay Street Theater, it promises a captivating journey into the realm of Afrofuturism.
Mark your calendars for the grand opening reception on Saturday, February 10th, from 2-5 pm. The exhibition will continue to dazzle audiences until Sunday, March 24th, welcoming visitors during Bay Street Theater’s lobby hours from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 11 am – 5 pm.
Venturing into the expansive aesthetic realm and multidisciplinary universe of Afrofuturism, this exhibition offers a unique perspective. Afrofuturism envisions an alternate reality, reinterprets a troubled past, celebrates the resilience of the African Diaspora, and imagines a future rich with liberated expressions across various art forms including music, literature, film, fashion, and space exploration.
Featuring esteemed artists such as Michael A. Butler, Judith Henriques-Adams, James P. Ward, and Dr. Nichelle Rivers, along with selected works on loan from the private collections of Michael A. Butler, Dr. Martin A. Butler, and the Eastville Community Historical Society, this exhibition promises to be a feast for the senses.
More than just an art exhibition, this event aims to introduce visitors to the intriguing concept of Afrofuturism while fostering a deeper appreciation for Black intellectual history.
