Eight Sides of Summer: Contemporary Waterfront Living on Shelter Island

Few places are better suited to an octagonal home than Shelter Island, particularly at 15 Dickerson Drive on Menantic Creek. Every viewpoint reaches outward toward the landscape, framing the water and sky, while the interiors turn inward, creating a warm, communal focal point for gathering with the people who matter most.

Unlike a more conventionally shaped home, where rooms tend to march politely from one end of the floor plan to the other, an eight-sided residence naturally turns inward. Its spaces linger around a center point. Sightlines overlap. Light enters from multiple directions. People, almost inevitably, find themselves drawn together.

And isn’t that what a summer house is supposed to do?

“15 Dickerson offers a ‘real estate trifecta’ as a customer said recently. Finding a waterfront home with a waterside pool and a dock on one acre at this price is a rare thing,” says the exclusive real estate agent representing the property, Penelope Moore of Saunders & Associates.

The best Hamptons and Shelter Island homes bring the people you care about closer while creating just enough distance from everything beyond the property line. At 15 Dickerson Drive, that balance between connection and privacy is expressed through architecture rather than simply added as an amenity.

Set on an acre with direct access to open water via West Neck Harbor, the residence places an unusual geometric design in an equally dynamic setting. Creek, harbor, sky, lawn, pool, patio, and dock unfold gradually across the property, creating a private waterfront retreat without sacrificing the easygoing functionality that summer living requires.

From the exterior, angular rooflines establish the home’s contemporary character. Clerestory windows and skylights introduce natural light while preserving a sense of seclusion, an architectural solution particularly well-suited to waterfront life. Sunshine arrives from nearly every side (and from above) without leaving the interior overly exposed.

Inside, the octagonal plan reveals its greatest strength. “People often ask why ‘geometric’? The first owners had an art collection, and the vast expanses of wall underneath the clerestory windows with the center fireplace was a dramatic entrance to the home that displayed their prized pieces in a unique way, with the blue water in the distance,” Penelope told us.

The main level is organized around a sculptural central fireplace, which acts as both a visual anchor and a reminder of the home’s distinctive shape. Above it, radiating ceiling planes extend outward like spokes, reinforcing the architecture while giving the principal living area a surprising sense of height and movement.

A fireplace is often described as the heart of a home; here, the home quite literally revolves around it.

This arrangement lends itself easily to contemporary life. The open layout allows conversations to continue across the living, dining, and kitchen areas so you and your guests can settle near the fire, move toward the dining table, wander out to the deck, or offer unrequested culinary advice from the breakfast bar—all while remaining part of the same gathering.

Windows placed around the perimeter continually reconnect the rooms to the landscape and water beyond.

Just off the main living space, the recently renovated kitchen is well equipped for both serious meal preparation and the more relaxed rhythms of a summer household. An eat-in countertop offers a natural place for morning coffee, casual lunches, or the inevitable late-afternoon conversation while slicing tomatoes in the kitchen.

A breakfast nook and dedicated dining area make room for everything from quiet morning coffee to lively dinners, all while keeping everyone connected to the heart of the home.

15 Dickerson Drive, Shelter Island, NY 11964

The open living areas flow onto a wraparound deck, extending the home’s distinctive geometry into the landscape. Here, indoor-outdoor living isn’t an afterthought but an integral part of the home’s design. Each section offers a different orientation throughout the day—catching the morning light, inviting a lazy afternoon, outdoor dining, quiet conversation.

And of course, there are the sunsets.

First-floor bedrooms, including an ensuite primary, each open to their own exterior areas and share a hall bath, allowing loved ones and guests to come and go without constantly passing through the central living space.

Independence is important, especially when you have guests. Togetherness works best when everyone also has somewhere to retreat.

15 Dickerson Drive, Shelter Island, NY 11964

Downstairs, in the finished lower level, a relaxed family room with a wet bar creates an easy retreat for games, movie nights, work-from-home, and the rainy Shelter Island afternoon. The additional space can accommodate guests, work, recreation, or some combination of the three, depending on how many people arrive for the weekend and how long they decide to stay.

Outside, the landscape descends toward Menantic Creek in a series of carefully arranged tiers. A deck surrounds the Gunite pool, creating a natural destination for swimming and lounging. Additional patio and seating areas allow everyone to spread out, while a broad lawn reaches toward the waterfront.

At the water’s edge, a private dock with a floating platform provides direct access for boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and spontaneous explorations of West Neck Harbor and the open water beyond. For a boater, the home becomes a point of departure as much as a destination.

What makes 15 Dickerson memorable, however, is not any single amenity. It is the way the architecture supports the rituals of summer.

Gather around the central fireplace, move easily between the kitchen and dining area, or follow the sun around the deck—the octagonal design gives every part of the day a natural rhythm, from swimming and reading to quiet moments apart and dinner together.

Contemporary luxury is sometimes mistaken for excess. Here, it is expressed more thoughtfully: abundant light, flexible spaces, a strong connection to the waterfront, and a floor plan that understands why people come to the Hamptons and Shelter Island in the first place.

At 15 Dickerson, eight sides prove more than enough to bring everything—and everyone—together.

  • Sant Ambroeus has become one of the East End’s most beloved dining destinations. The place has style, serves gelato and espresso all day, offers inviting outdoor seating, and delivers a world-class dining experience.

Their fresh pasta is made with eggs, and doesn’t weigh you down like other pasta does. The signature branzino dish has become a calling card for the Southampton location.

No visit is complete without a stop at the gelato counter, where handcrafted gelato and sorbetto are churned in-house, offering a cool, classic finish to a summer meal.

You’ll see me there again sipping an espresso and pretending to be Italian. Diet starts tomorrow.
  • Ralph’s Coffee is popping up at Mulford Farm for the summer season. Stop by from 8am - 5pm for specialty drinks, pastries, outdoor seating, and lawn games until September 7th.

  • Today, @childrensmuseumoftheeastend hosted its 16th Annual Family Fair in Bridgehampton, raising funds for its on-site food pantry, providing summer camp scholarships to local children, and supporting other initiatives that serve East End families year-round.

A special thank you to CMEE and lead event sponsor Saunders & Associates for welcoming us to capture the day’s magic.

  • Last week, Rebecca Minkoff, alongside RummiKlubLA founders Laura Galvan and Marnie Wekselblatt, celebrated the launch of their first collaboration, a limited-edition blue terrycloth RummiKlubLA game set, with a Hamptons-style game day at the picturesque Maidstone Inn in East Hampton.

The limited-edition game set features a vibrant cobalt-blue terrycloth carrying case, playing pieces, and racks featuring the signature Rebecca Minkoff logo. The set feels luxurious and is a summer essential.

  • If you’re into Mediterranean cuisine, Calissa is the spot for you. From the moment you arrive, you’re greeted with complimentary valet parking, amazing front-of-house staff, and an oasis of Greek fine dining. The place runs like a jet engine: an open kitchen, sexy interior, an energetic environment, a long bar, and an enormous outdoor dining area.

We sat down and started with the Saganaki, the world-famous fried Greek cheese. They do it right at Calissa: coated in sesame seeds and drizzled with fresh honey, the dish is a flavor bomb. I recommend ordering the steak here, it comes out cooked perfectly with fresh tomatoes. We also tried the grilled octopus, which is listed as an appetizer but could easily stand in as your entrée if you’re looking to eat a little lighter that evening.

If you feel like dancing, the restaurant transforms into a lively bar after 10pm making for a real Hamptons memory. The entire evening at Calissa is special. Highly recommend.
