Once a year, the oak-paneled Fireside Room of St. Mary’s in Hampton Bays is transported back in time to “Hampton Abbey,” where the ladies and gentlemen of the East End spend their afternoon in Downton Abbey, sipping tea served in traditionally elegant settings.
“I organized a table at the Hampton Abbey tea that brought together friends from different parts of my life who didn’t know each other,” said Julie Sheehan about last year’s inaugural event. “In such a pretty spot, it’s no surprise they hit it off and have become fast friends.”
On Saturday, May 9th, St. Mary’s is hosting High Tea at Hampton Abbey, a posh fundraiser benefitting the outreach missions at St. Mary’s, from shelter for the homeless to college scholarships. Two seatings are available, the first is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a second will follow from 2 to 4 p.m. This year’s event will also feature a few additional tea tables in the secluded garden of this idyllic, Norman-style church on Ponquogue Avenue, weather permitting. Attendees will enjoy all the traditional trappings of high tea, including finger sandwiches, petits fours, scones, and their choice of Earl Grey or Darjeeling tea. Falling the day before Mother’s Day, the benefit makes the perfect surprise gift.
“There’s something about the Fireside Room, with its wood panelling and big stone fireplace, that practically begs for scones,” said Judith Rose. “The Hampton Abbey tea is a delight.”
Tickets to the 2nd Annual “Hampton Abbey” Tea must be purchased in advance and are currently on sale through Saturday, April 25th, or until sold out. Admission is $25 per person.
