Southampton Historical Museum Honoring Monumental Hamptons Anniversary With Year-Long Series Of Events

Founded in 1640, Southampton Town is celebrating its 375th Anniversary this year and Southampton Historical Museum is commemorating the occasion with a series of special events during 2015.

The festivities begin with a Lecture Series at the Rogers Memorial Library (91 Coopers Farm Road, Southampton). On Thursday, January 22nd at 3 p.m., Tom Edmonds, Executive Director of the Southampton Historical Museum, will lead “A Brief History of North Sea.” The presentation will cover the turbulent cultural transformations in Southampton during the 17th century as well as the development of an imperative colonial port called Feversham, which is currently known as North Sea.

Next up is “The Manors of Long Island” on Thursday, February 19th at 3 p.m. Dr. Gaynell Stone directed the documentary which takes a look at the 13 Manors located in Suffolk County and also offers a new perspective on the settlement of Long Island. Manors were created by grants from Colonial governors and gave owners of large properties certain advantages over their territory. During her research for the film, Dr. Stone discovered several manors that were previously unknown to scholars. The film is a sequel to “The Sugar Connection: Holland, Barbados, Shelter Island,” the story of Sylvester Manor on Shelter Island and its role in the 17th-century global trade.

The final February event is “We Come This Far by Faith” on Thursday, February 26th at 3 p.m. During the lecture, Dr. Grier-Key will examine important influences that African Americans have had on society and in our country with a local outlook. The discussion will include the struggle as well as the endurance and the human spirit that inspired Americans and evoked justice. It will also feature influential and widely renowned voices of historic and community leaders and the movements that have had an impact on the “post era.”
