Alena knows how to make people smile. Not just because she is funny and charming (that helps). It’s not just that she is taking your photo at an exclusive event in the Hamptons (that definitely helps). The real smile starts when you see the photograph Alena just took of you. If that’s not enough, the success of her photography business is as perfectly American as the Lunch Atop a Skyscraper, a testament to the Hamptons’ entrepreneurial spirit.
For a luxury photographer in the Hamptons, you have to know how to create lasting memories. People can get weird when they know they are on camera, plus – there is etiquette to how to have your photograph taken. Trust me, I’ve seen her around at galas, and she always makes everyone look good (me included, and I can be picky about how I look in pictures!)
As a writer, I disagree with the old adage that “a picture is worth a thousand words.” But I’ll admit, Alena’s photographs speak for themselves, and I’m not sure words quite capture them. Be sure you follow her on social media @kostromina.production because she is sincerely hilarious and gives a behind-the-scenes look at the life of a luxury photographer (you know you are interested).
Hamptons.com spoke with Alena Kostromina for an insider’s lens on the life of a luxury photographer, tips for an amateur, plus some do’s-and-don’ts when having your photograph taken professionally.
Talking to Alena is a delight. She is the type of artist who encourages and appreciates amateurs—everybody loves that—even better, she is still available for booking in Summer 2024!
How often do you come to the Hamptons and when did you start visiting?
I lived in the Hamptons full-time for about 3-5 years on and off. When I moved from Russia to the USA on a work and travel program, I landed a job offer at Pierre’s Market and worked between the market and the restaurant for 2 years while learning English and making new friends. Then I started working at Tutto while trying to find time to get back into photography, but it took me a full 8 years to become a full-time photographer in the USA. Now, I work all around America and come out east almost every weekend, even during the off-season, for weddings and family photoshoots.
What kinds of events do you enjoy working on the most?
Oh, hard to tell. I LOVE big, fancy events, galas, and weddings. It makes me feel very special to be part of it. But I also enjoy photographing small, intimate dinners.
Are you available for events over the rest of the Summer 2024?
Yes! Summer 2024 still has some availability! But my autumn schedule already getting tight with weddings and family photoshoots.
What trends are you seeing at exclusive Hamptons events this summer?
Black caviar and champagne are just a classy part of any event out east. I see a lot of pop-up shops with sip-and-shop concepts and art installations. I photograph many wellness events where they combine non-alcoholic cocktails, face yoga, breath meditation, and work on awareness. Overall, the Hamptons this summer are marked by a mix of high-end social events, fashion, wellness, and cultural experiences.
You work with lots of famous and image-sensitive clients, what can your clients expect from you in terms of discretion?
My clients can expect the highest level of discretion and professionalism from me. Often, they enjoy having their photos shared on my social media, but we can also tailor contracts to protect their privacy when needed. Every project is handled with strict confidentiality if that’s necessary. It’s all about what makes my clients feel comfortable and respected.
What are your thoughts on the “enhance” feature on phone photography?
It took me a while to train my best friend to take good photos of me, not everyone naturally has “it” and if that feature can help people to make their memories better, I’m all in for that.
What makes you cringe when you see amateur photography?
Haha, well, if you saw my “work” from 2011, I guarantee you would cringe over it. So I’m not judging. I’ve been there, done that. I’m all in for people to have a hobby and try to make this hobby into something that can bring income. They just have to be realistic and not jump into weddings right after purchasing their camera… that just can ruin someone’s big day.
Let’s say I see someone taking photos at an event. What’s the best way to ask if they will take my photo?
Oh, just ask! Trust me, as a photographer, I walk around and, non-stop, ask people to pose for me. If someone comes to me and asks to take their photo, it makes me so happy that I didn’t have to ask for it myself!
Let’s say I’m at an event with many models all around and professional photographers taking pictures of them. Is it okay if I take some photos of my own? Or, should I lay back?
It’s okay to do that if you don’t interfere with the photographer, usually, at events, it’s not all that serious, and models love multiple cameras anyway. (As long as you are not being creepy!)
What misconceptions do people have about your work?
I often hear that people perceive me as very expressive, but they are pleased to find out that my prices are quite affordable, definitely less than BFA. For a long time, people didn’t know that I also do weddings and events. So I’ve started combining both of my Instagram accounts for artwork and events, so I think this issue has been resolved.
Any art photographers you would like to highlight?
I like Peter Beard a lot!
What got you into photography in the first place?
I was always an artistic child, and I picked up a camera at 11 years old, right when social media was taking off, and people wanted photos for it. Being quite shy as a child, the camera became a safe barrier between me and others; initially, it was my way to make friends, meet new people, and have something to do outside my room.
What can someone do to become more photogenic?
Keep moving while the camera is on you. Lift your chin up and down and rotate your shoulders to find your best angles. I think it’s mainly about how you feel about yourself. Clothes can also change your appearance. I believe confidence is what makes people look beautiful on camera. A cute outfit and good lighting can work wonders if you’re struggling with confidence.
How do you learn to smile with your eyes?
To be honest, I don’t think anyone is asking for that at a photoshoot anymore. But, you have to relax your face and think happy thoughts. You have to have a little smile, too, but with a closed mouth.
Are duck lip selfies coming back?
Were they ever out??
What’s the best filter to use for a #NoFilter post?
I don’t use Instagram filters, but there is one I really like in Tezza app “fresh.” It doesn’t change your face but lights it up and brightens the photo in general.
