The gentle roars of the waves intermix with the sounds of children’s laughter and the heartwarming cheers of families as they gather on the picturesque shores of Ditch Plains in Montauk. On Friday September 8th and Saturday September 9th, from 8:00am to 2:00pm, A Walk on Water will be hosting its annual charity event as they continue to help serve thousands of children with unique needs and their families through transformative Surf Therapy.
Founded in 2012, A Walk on Water (AWOW) is a remarkable nonprofit organization that uses the power of the ocean to provide a life-changing experience for children and adults with special needs. Established with the belief that the sea can heal and empower, the AWOW surf therapy event offers participants a unique opportunity to embrace the freedom and exhilaration of riding the waves while fostering a sense of accomplishment and building self-confidence.
AWOW has strategically established a strong volunteer-to-athlete ratio, creating an environment where every participant can connect deeply with fellow athletes and volunteers. This intentional approach paves the way for enduring and significant relationships. These lifelong connections play a pivotal role in nurturing the self-assurance required for each young participant to excel not just in the challenging art of surfing but, more crucially, in navigating life’s unpredictable currents.
If you are an experienced surfer and would like to volunteer as one of AWOW’s Surf Therapist in this year’s event or are interested in donating, visit their website, A Walk On Water, for more information.
