On Friday, October 3, and Saturday, October 4, the Old Southampton Burying Ground is getting an update during a Historic Burying Ground Adult Workshop sponsored by the Town of Southampton and Office of the Town Clerk, Sundy A. Schermeyer, with support from the Historic Division and the Southampton Historical Museum and Research Center.
Under the direction of professional stone conservator Joel Snodgrass, participants will remove failed repairs and reassemble broken fragments. Admission is free and all attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing.
Through this workshop, the Old Southampton Burying Ground will work to preserve the remains and monuments of the town’s earliest residents and historic settlers. All of the burying lots are preserved and maintained as sacred sites within the Town, including the notable headstones of the Howell and Herrick families.
The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days.
The Old Southampton Burying Ground is located at 205 Little Plains Road in Southampton Village. For more information, call 631-287-5740 or visit www.southamptonhistoricalmuseum.org.
