Did the U.S. women’s hockey team’s amazing Olympic gold medal win over Canada make you want to take up skating? Join Katy’s Courage for the seventh annual Skate-A-Thon.
Taking place at Buckskill Winter Club in East Hampton on Sunday, March 4, the event is open to all ages and levels – offering a multitude of on ice activities.
“It’s a great event for children and families!” Jim Stewart, co-founder of Katy’s Courage, shared. “Skaters of all abilities can enjoy the day.”
The fundraiser will launch with a public skate at 1:15 p.m., followed by ice maintenance from 2:45 to 3 p.m., and another public skate at 3 p.m.
At 4:45 p.m., the Skate-A-Thon Puck Throw will take place – pre-registration is available for those interested in participating – and then a figure skating recital featuring coaches and children will entertain from 5 to 6 p.m.
Those taking part in the Skate-A-Thon will take the ice at 6 p.m. and skate on through until 7:15 p.m.
There will be another break for ice maintenance at 7:15 p.m. and then it’s time for the always amusing hockey game – pre-registration is required – which will take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
“Hockey players of all ages will love the game under the stars in the evening,” Stewart said.
In addition to an evening on the ice, the Skate-A-Thon will also include a bake sale because all that skating will most certainly make you work up an appetite and a spectacular fundraising raffle. The raffle winners will be announced at 7:30 p.m.
All proceeds will benefit Katy’s Courage, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization honoring Katy Stewart, who passed away at 12-years-old from a rare form of pediatric liver cancer. The organization is committed to “supporting education, children’s bereavement counseling and pediatric cancer research.”
“We thank the DeGroots and Cory Lillie for organizing this event in memory of Katy and for supporting Katy’s Courage and the efforts we make on behalf of children and their families; and of course, as always, we are so grateful the continued support of our generous East End community,” Stewart added.
The Skate-A-Thon rain date is Sunday, March 11.
Additionally, Katy’s Courage will hold its annual 5K on Saturday, April 21.
