2019 HarborFest To Feature Signature Whaleboat Races, A Taste Of Sag Harbor, Tug Of War, And More Entertainment For All Ages

“The Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to be presenting HarborFest on Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 8,” Lisa Field, Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce President, shared.

The two-day village-wide happening will once again commemorate the maritime history of Sag Harbor.

“We are looking forward to a great event with lots of activities for children including some old fashioned fun like tug of war and corn shucking contests,” Field noted. Long Wharf will be home to many of the exciting activities, including a variety geared towards children, such as bounce castles, games, competitions, and amusements. There will be a friendly competitive atmosphere to Windmill Beach – as that’s where tug-of-wars, hula hoop contests and the annual corn shucking contest will take place.

HarborFest’s signature event, the Whaleboat Races – which date back to 1964’s Old Whalers Festival, will begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday and 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. Men’s, Women’s, Junior’s and Firefighter divisions will compete for bragging rights. “The much anticipated Whaleboat races are the highlight of the weekend as local teams compete to win the coveted Whalers Cup,” she explained.

The Chamber’s Arts and Crafts Fair and Sidewalk Sale on Main Street will be held concurrently. “In addition to all the activities on Long Wharf, there will be an Arts and Crafts Fair at Marine Park featuring local artists, photographers, jewelers, and other vendors,” Field revealed. “Main Street will be bustling with excitement as the Whale of a Sale Sidewalk Fair has merchants bringing their wares onto the sidewalk.”

HarborFest will commence on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the Arts and Crafts Fair in Marine Park and Sidewalk Sale. Then, the day will feature a myriad of entertainment, including Songs and Stories of the Sea (for children) at Annie Cooper Boyd House (10 a.m.), literary walking tours at John Jermain Library (10 a.m.), a live nautical music with John Corr at Windmill Beach (10 a.m. to 11 a.m.), children’s amusements, games and activities on the Long Wharf (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), a classic boat display on the Long Wharf (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), A Taste of Sag Harbor on the Long Wharf (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), a hands-on artisan crafts & sale at Annie Cooper Boyd House (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.), children’s tug-of-war at Windmill Beach (11 a.m.), Tussie Mussie workshop with Bonnie Grice at Annie Cooper Boyd House (11 a.m.), live music: Sag Harbor Community Band on the Long Wharf (11 a.m.), Whalers Cup races, elimination round #1, at Long Wharf and Windmill Beach (12 p.m.), kids’ corn shucking contest (register the Windmill) on the Long Wharf (1 p.m.), live music: The Scofflaws on the Long Wharf (1 to 3 p.m.), Firefighters’ Cup whaleboat races, Sag Harbor FD Championship, at Long Wharf and Windmill Beach (1:30 p.m.), children’s potato sack race at Windmill Beach (2:30 p.m.), Whalers Cup races, elimination round #2, at Long Wharf and Windmill Beach (3 p.m.), children’s hula hoop fun on the Long Wharf (3 p.m.), live music: the Hoo Doo Loungers on the Long Wharf (4 p.m.), live music: Gene Casey and the Lone Sharks on the Long Wharf (6 p.m.), live music: The Complete Unknowns, a Bob Dylan tribute band, at Bay Street Theater (8 p.m.).

“There will be plenty of food options as we have expanded our Taste of the Hamptons to include several local restaurants and food trucks. Come hungry and you won’t be disappointed!” Field advised.

On Sunday, once again the Arts and Crafts Fair and Sidewalk Sale kick-off festivities. Then, it’s live music: Tim Fitall and Sampawams Creek on the Long Wharf (10 a.m. to 12 p.m.), children’s amusements, games, activities on the Long Wharf (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), a classic boat display on the Long Wharf (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.), A Taste of Sag Harbor on the Long Wharf (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), children’s tug-of-war at Windmill Beach (11 a.m.), Junior Whaleboat elimination and semifinal rounds at Long Wharf and Windmill Beach (11:30 a.m.), Whaleboat Races semifinal at Long Wharf and Windmill Beach (12 p.m.), children’s corn shucking contest at Windmill Beach (1 p.m.), live music with Jim Turner on the Long Wharf (1 to 3 p.m.), Whaleboat Race, Fire Department Final, at Long Wharf and Windmill Beach (1:30 p.m.), a children’s hula hoop contest on the Long Wharf (3 p.m.), the Whaleboat Race Championship at Long Wharf and Windmill Beach (3 p.m.), and Keith Leaf Fire Juggler on the Long Wharf (3 to 5 p.m.).

“It’s going to be an exciting weekend in Sag Harbor,” Field concluded. “So come enjoy the festivities, live music, food and beverage, shop the local shops, and celebrate all that Sag Harbor has to offer.”

  • Did You Know That Seagulls Love Spaghetti?

I have no idea who was the first person to think of bringing a bowl of spaghetti to the beach to share with a seagull but my money’s on Jackson Pollack who happened to love spaghetti after having it for the first time at 18.

  • Sensational Food at the 1770 House

All I can say is wow. JUST WOW!

The 1770 House is the real deal. It’s some of the best fine dining that the Hamptons has to offer. Executive Chef Michael Rozzi has put together a menu that is hard to beat and the restaurant is run by long-time manager, Carol Covell. I want to get to the food because that’s the real star of the show, but the people that work here are also. @1770house

The entire street has transformed for the better thanks to the developers of 8 luxury properties on a relatively unknown South of the Highway cul-de-sac in Amagansett.

Romaine Gordon of Saunders & Associates, the exclusive listing agent, has been ringing the news about this unique opportunity. “These houses are absolutely gorgeous and the cul-de-sac is a hidden gem. You are right in the heart of Amagansett, minutes to the ocean beaches and Amagansett village. Each property offers every amenity a buyer could want. To have something like this South of the Highway in Amagansett in this price range is really a special opportunity for buyers.” @hamptonsrealestate @romainehamptons

  • Sixty-Something: My Two Favorite Hamptons Movies and Book

Before there was easily accessible internet and various movie streaming networks, there was always the East Hampton Library – that beautiful historic building located on the corner of the beginning of Route 114 and intersecting Route 27. My first year as an east-end writer I actually composed all of my articles in the basement of that library. They had primitive internet access computers there.
