As you might have noticed, in the past few years, interior and exterior design and decoration have been marked by whites and neutrals. The “Clean Girl” aesthetic took the internet by storm in 2022 and 2023, furthering this push towards palettes that lacked color and praised beige cohesion. As we dive further into 2024, a new wave of trends is emerging, and style experts are noticing a shift from neutral palettes to ones that aren’t afraid of some color. So, how will this translate into the house plants and gardens you’ll see blooming this spring and summer in the Hamptons? Homes & Gardens says, “Bold, colorful, and strong structures are on the cards for plant owners.”
As for what plants you can integrate into your homes and backyard gardens to bring some color and freshness to your designs– Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.
Pink seems to be the color of the moment, especially after the Barbie movie grossed $1.4 Billion in sales globally. So, in honor of that, let’s talk about the Calathea Ornata or ‘pink star.’ Its leaves, commonly known as prayer leaves, often have light pink to bright magenta striped paths across their surfaces. Indirect sunlight will keep their stripes as pink as possible. They are normally found on the floor of tropical forests, so be careful not to over-water them.
Dicentra, more commonly known as “Bleeding Hearts,” is a perfect choice for a beginner gardener because this plant prefers shade and is easy to care for. Their flowers resemble dripping hearts and are particularly resistant to deer, which is perfect for the Hamptons and our large deer population.
Another hot trend that I have been seeing in wedding bouquets recently has been flowers that resemble pom poms or bubbles. These next few flowers would be perfect to work in your home gardens this year.
Craspedia, or commonly known as the Drumstick Flower, are perennial flowers that are often used when needing to add a little bit of texture and color to your gardens. They are considered low-maintenance plants because they require very little water and fresh fertilizer only at the beginning of the growing season. They remind me so clearly of the flowers found in many of the childrens books written by Dr. Suess.
You might know this next plant for what grows beneath the dirt. Allium is a beautiful cloud-like purple flower that blooms from the stem and scape of a garlic bulb! What fun it would be to grow your own garlic this summer while adding to the colors in your garden. Garlic and Allium is one of the easiest crops to grow and requires very little maintenance. It thrives in the end of summer and fall months, so mark your calendars this Labor Day!
Better Homes & Gardens has crowned the Peony as the “Flower of The Year” for 2024. You can’t go wrong with their beautifully fluffy and romantic blooms. Peonies range in color from red, pink, white, and purple. They do wonderfully in the early summer months, and prefer moist soil that drains well. If they don’t fit in your garden design this year, they certainly will look great in a vase to decorate around your home.
We can’t wait to see all the beautiful gardens this summer in the Hamptons will bring!
