On April 18th, rain or shine, the Fourteenth Annual Katy’s Courage 5K will be held in Sag Harbor. On race day, registration and check-ins will take place from 7am to 8:15 a.m., and the run will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. Runners will start at Water Street, head north, make a right onto Main Street, make a right onto Glover Street, run through the Redwood section of the course, and finish back on Water Street. Cost is $25 in advance and $30 on race day.
The story of Katy Stewart, an inspirational 12-year-old girl who died from a rare form of pediatric liver cancer, touched the whole East End and inspired an organization dedicated to supporting education, children’s bereavement counseling, and pediatric cancer research to be founded.
Katy’s parents, Brigid Collins and Jim Stewart shared “After such a long, cold winter, it’s so refreshing to get outside and see our supporters, friends, and families come together for this heart-shaped 5K. We’re incredibly grateful for the camaraderie and love shown for a cause that means so much to us, honoring Katy’s memory.”
They also issued the following statement:
“All our East End Friends, We see how many people come out each year to show they live their lives with gratitude and appreciation, and it inspires us every time. Our East End community showing up, sharing joy and enthusiasm, these are the things that make each Katy’s Courage 5k so special and filled with an atmosphere of appreciation.
The participants bring a real warmth and community feeling to the annual event, and it is very moving to see. There are so many people to thank for the success of the race, we could not possibly mention them all. Mayor Gardella, Dee Yardley, The Sag Harbor Police and Fire Departments, The Boy Scouts, Terri Federico, Nell Lowell, Keegan Blaney, Sandy Jungck, our Race Director, Jenn Walker, and so many other volunteers!
Thank you so very much to our generous sponsors, and, of course, a HUGE thank you to all the runners and walkers. It is a privilege to have a home on the East End, and a privilege to receive such kind support for Katy’s Courage 5K. Our very warmest wishes to all”
