INTERVIEW: Ron Wendt Dishes On Entertaining In The Hamptons

Ron Wendt, owner of Ron Wendt Design – who was named the man behind the most Instagram-worthy parties by WWD – is tapped to design and execute many of the Hamptons most notable summer bashes – like the Parrish Art Museum’s Midsummer Party.

We recently caught up with Wendt, who also regularly collaborates with iconic fashion brands like Chanel, Cartier and Louis Vuitton, about entertaining in the Hamptons.

What are your party must-haves?

RW:

  • Good lighting. You can elevate your party simply by dimming the lights and placing a few candles.
  • A good playlist. Music sets the tone so a great playlist can really make your party a hit.
  • Flowers! Either fresh from your garden or the local farm stand, flowers add a little color to your table.
  • Great libations. Have it ready for both for your guests’ arrivals and throughout the event.

What’s the most important thing to remember when planning for a summer party?

RW: It’s always important to plan for the weather, especially in the summer. Be conscious of how hot it will be during your party and adjust your plans accordingly. Always offer a shady or cooler spot if entertaining outside to ensure everyone’s comfort.

Have you noticed any emerging summer party trends? If so, what are they and what are some easy ways to incorporate them?

RW: Splits of champagne are emerging as a summer entertaining trend. You can serve each of your guests their own personal bottle for an easy summer drink. Add a patterned straw and custom label for a great spin on a new trend.

Balloons are also a great new décor trend for outdoor and indoor spaces. From balloon sculptures to oversize balloons, this inexpensive décor option can add a touch of excitement to any event.

What sets entertaining in the Hamptons apart?

RW: The Hamptons provide the perfect backdrop to just about any type of party, from a classic dinner party to a casual beach party. Despite its close proximity to New York City, the Hamptons can often feel worlds away, offering an escape for guests and hosts alike and a setting unlike any other. Entertaining out east has an innate feeling of summer embedded in every party.

For those who find entertaining intimidating, what are some tips that will make any gathering a success?

RW: If entertaining isn’t your forte, try to break it down piece by piece by creating a plan and a checklist. Prep in advance and don’t overwhelm yourself by doing every task; delegate to those around you. If your favorite summer meal is a clambake, contact your local seafood shop (they are a dime a dozen in the Hamptons!) and ask them to provide the food.

What is the most memorable soiree you’ve organized and why?

RW: It’s hard to pick to just one event because every event has memorable moments. Our most recent memorable soiree was out here in Water Mill where we designed a one-of-a-kind tent for a night of live theatrical performances by European performers.

How can one elevate their gathering with a floral arrangement featuring local blooms?

RW: A simply way to elevate your arrangement is through your vessel selection. Pick something that will showcase your blooms. The choice of container, whether it be modern, vintage or classic, can transform your arrangement.

Is there anything else you would like to add about entertaining in the Hamptons?

RW: With only 15 weekends of summer, don’t forget to relax and enjoy your time in the Hamptons.

    • Discover Hamptons History with East Hampton Historical Society’s Guided Tours

We all know that September is the best month in the Hamptons. The summer renters have mostly gone (we’ll miss you!). The weather practically demands that you go out for a walk. Maybe you’ve been too busy at the beach or planning activities for the kids, but now that it’s September, take a stroll, stretch your legs, and explore the rich, beautiful history around the Hamptons.

The East Hampton Historical Society is hosting Guided Walking Tours around the Hamptons all September long, so stay a while and listen.

I love walking tours not just because of the guides, who are great storytellers, but the company and conversations sparked with other attendees. We’re the kind of people you’ll see, hands on hips, squinting to read the well-worn plaque on a historical monument. The people who read those brown signs, who pick up and read the local leaflets at a museum or hotel lobby. @easthampton_histsoc

    • Real Estate with Diane Saatchi: The One That Got Away

When most people think back to the one that got away, they think about relationships.

I think about real estate.

After 35 years of selling real estate, I’ve seen more instances of homebuyers and sellers getting fixated on the one that got away than you’d think. For buyers, it could be that perfect three-bedroom waterfront cottage that was snapped up the day after they viewed it.

In cases like these, the one that got away isn’t just a quiet reminiscence — it’s a shadow that falls over the months and even years to come, making it difficult if not impossible for would-be buyers to find something that measures up to what they had, or thought they had, before.
