Hello and welcome to this brand-new series where a kid too young to rent a car eats (and rates) his way through the Hamptons’ gantlet of the most expensive sandwich known to man! There’s no arguing that a lobster roll is a staple of the Northeast coast and even more specifically of the east end, and my goal is to highlight the best and worst of your options out here for America’s favorite shellfish sandwich.
Now, why am I a credible and trustworthy source of information on the topic? I may have grown up making weekly visits to Montauk and I have lived in Bridgehampton for the past two years, but I did live in Seattle, the salmon capital of the U.S. (South of Canada, sorry Alaska) for 15 years. And I’m 24, so that’s a majority of my life. So you’d be right to believe I may not have the best lobster-eating pedigree. That being said, lobster is one of my favorite foods and my perfect SAT writing score from seven years ago and I would like to prove that we are worthy of your attention, starting with a great roll over at the Seafood Shop in Wainscott.
A simple-looking meal from head-to-toe, this lobster salad is served on an un-toasted potato roll with waffle fries and coleslaw in a recyclable three-compartment takeout container. However, this sandwich impresses with its perfection of the basics. The lobster salad had perfectly sized chunks of lobster, a perfectly creamy dressing and the perfect amount of crunchy celery that made every bite evenly filled. The only thing that wasn’t as perfect was the choice of a potato bun, but I still thoroughly enjoyed my lobster roll, so I digress.
The waffle fries had a fantastic crispy outside and soft inside with just enough seasoning, making them an ideal addition to the meal. The coleslaw was a welcome inclusion but was nothing to write home about (I did still tell you, but you’re not exactly my house, are you?). Also worth mentioning that although price does not factor into my final rating, the $26 spent here was more than worth it.
So how does the first stop on the journey rate? I believe a 4/5 stars is well deserved here for a great lobster roll, and a great baseline for the rest of the series.
