Beloved Artist Birdhouse Auction Returning After Three Year Break

This September, you can beautify your yard, provide a new hangout for the wildlife that visits your outdoor oasis and support Lucia’s Angels and The Coalition for Women’s Cancers at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital by scooping up a unique piece of artwork – some of which are just too pretty to display outside – at the 11th Annual Artist Birdhouse Auction: In Memory of Don Saco.

“After a three year hiatus, and many requests, we decided to re-start the much loved Birdhouse Auction,” explained Karyn Mannix.

The auction will be held on Saturday, September 23 at Union Cantina in Southampton from 4 to 7 p.m.

“We changed up a few components to the event,” noted Mannix. “This year we decided to start rotating artists from year to year.”

This year’s auction will also be more intimate. “We will have 50 birdhouses as compared to the normal amount of 100,” Mannix shared. “I feel it becomes a bit overwhelming when there is so many to choose from.”

Auctiongoers will enjoy passed hor d’oeuvres, a full bar, the chance to admire the exceptional one-of-a-kind birdhouses, and live and silent auctions.

“And as usual, we have an impressive list of talented artists,” added Mannix.

David Rufo’s Dot House.

Participating artists include Arlene Bujese, Asia Lee, Billy Strong, Breahna Arnold, Brian Turnball, Camille Perrottet, Craig Banks, Craig Socia, Cruz, Cynthia Loewen, Dan Rizzie, Dan Welden, Daniel Pollera, David Rufo, Doug Reina, Eric Ernst, Gabriele Raacke, Georgia Griffin, Gia Schifano, Jackie Fuchs, Jason Collidge, Jay Schneiderman, Jim Brandes, John Rist, Karyn Mannix, Kevin Willets, Kryn Olson, Linda and John Capello, Lori Pavsner, Margaret DeLima, Martha McAleer, Matt DeBernardo, Maxine Liao, Michael Lownie, Michael Weisman, Nicholas Tarr, NiXiN Moore, Preston Phillips, Rosalind Brenner, Russell Blue, Scott Bluedorn, Sean Sullivan, Stephanie Brody-Lederman, Steve Zaluski, Sue Carlo, Sue Zola, Susan Lazarus Reiman, and Will Ryan.

The 11th Annual Artist Birdhouse Auction will honor Don Saco who had been a part of the Birdhouse Auction since its inception and a longtime supporter of the local breast cancer movement on the East End. Saco, a sculptor and clinical psychologist, passed away earlier this year.

Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door. For those unable to attend, absentee bids will be accepted by calling 631-329-2811 or emailing [email protected]. To view the birdhouses, visit www.karynmannixcontemporary.com.

Union Cantina is located at 40 Bowden Square in Southampton. For more information, call 631-726-8715 or visit www.luciasangels.org.

  • Traffic in the Hamptons is Time Sensitive

Traffic in the Hamptons is time sensitive. Going east from 6 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and west from 4 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. has become quite an ordeal. The initial expansion of “Highway 39” back around 2006-2007, in which the two-lane road was expanded to four and in some places six lanes, no longer is alleviating the traffic flow.

  • Sixty/Something: Solid Gold Rent

My first full-time year in the Hamptons started as a weekend and lasted a decade. I paid rent to a host of folks thinking I’d be moving back to NYC. Somehow the east end helped me transition to a very happily remarried east end guy.

This tale all started with me, a divorced dad having a fateful ride to Joe Shaw’s home as a favor to pick up a deposit on his sailboat. That day ended with me buying his sailboat. It was an on the spot spur of the moment epiphany moment. I knew nothing about sailboats or east end bays.

  • Bideawee Animal Rescue: “Stay Awhile”

It’s been more than two years since the start of the pandemic where there was a significant increase in animal adoptions, known as the “pandemic puppy craze.” Now, animal shelters across the country have been experiencing a lull in adoptions.

Bideawee is one of the country’s oldest and most respected animal welfare and pet adoption organizations. They have locations in New York City, Wantagh, and Westhampton, and they are encouraging the community to consider bringing a deserving and lovable pet into their home. @bideawee
