The Peter Matthiessen Center – a proposed writers retreat located on the former Sagaponack property of the late novelist, naturalist, human rights activist and Zen master – is hosting a fundraiser at Southampton Arts Center (SAC) on Sunday, September 20.
“Guests will gather at the Southampton Arts Center for an intimate garden cocktail reception and outdoor film screening of No Boundaries, Jeff Sewald’s documentary film narrated by Glenn Close celebrating the life of Peter Matthiessen,” Daniela Kronemeyer of the Peter Mattheissen Center said. “Delicious cuisine and local wine will be served in one of the East End’s most beautiful sculpture gardens. Attendants include local artists, environmentalists and writers working to bring the Peter Matthiessen Center to life.”
Presented in collaboration with Peconic Land Trust and SAC, the gathering will begin at 5:00 p.m. with an intimate cocktail party in the sculpture garden – where guests will learn about the next phase of the Center’s campaign. The film will commence at 6:30 p.m. on the West Lawn.
“As a novelist, naturalist, advocate for Native American rights and longtime Zen teacher, Peter’s global vision resonates on a deep level with so many of us by embodying the importance of living in harmony with each other and the natural world,” Kronemyer added. “If successful, the Center will be located on Peter’s former property, an enchanting natural paradise down the road from the Ocean, becoming the first writing residency of its kind on the East End with a focus on environmental conservation, social justice issues and Zen practice.”
Tickets are $150 for the cocktail reception and film screening, and $25 for just the film screening. Advance reservations are required, as space is limited. Guests are required to wear masks and follow social distancing guidelines. Bringing a beach chair or blanket is encouraged.
