Jean and Martin Shafiroff hosted a St. Patrick’s Day cocktail party honoring Stony Brook Southampton Hospital – with Patrick McMullan as their special guest – this past Sunday. In keeping with the Luck of the Irish, guests did NOT have to fight their way through barricaded streets: the parade was the day before. In keeping with the holiday spirit, they were encouraged to wear green. Jean greeted all in an Oscar de la Renta green and gold ball gown.
Faith and Begorrah, Jean never misses an opportunity to draw attention to her favorite charities. As a former chair of the Southampton Hospital galas, she broke fundraising records. This summer’s Hospital 61st Annual Summer Party (Saturday, August 3rd) will honor Jean and Martin. And she has been named to the board of Stony Brook Southampton Hospital Association. “There are two things you need – a good hospital and a good ambulance,” she told her guests. “I am incredibly grateful for the hospital as without it, I wouldn’t be here.”
For Jean, it’s a way to give back to the well being of the year round community. And it’s part of her larger message, detailed in her book, Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life by What You Give: there are many ways of giving besides monetary contributions. Giving of your time, talent and caring is significant to others and fulfilling for yourself.
