Another win can be tallied for the fight against ovarian cancer after this weekend’s Super Saturday 16 garage sale in the Hamptons. The bargain bonanza raised a whopping $3.5 million for Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.
Never underestimate a woman in a good pair of wedges. Hundreds of fashionista’s, lined up ready to do some serious hunting. Their prey being the neatly dictated rows of designer shoes, bags, and apparel under the great white tent in the middle of Water Mill’s Nova’s Ark Project.
Those neatly lined racks were just the calm before the storm. The garage sale erupted and clothes went flying. Literally. For an event where there is an abundance of clothing to be had, there isn’t always a lot of clothing being worn.
With no fitting rooms on sight and bargains to be had, modesty goes out the window, especially when you have a Hamptons-ready figure. Girls clad in nothing but bikini’s trying on the heavily discounted clothes is a common sight.
“I’ve never seen so many girls strip down to nothing so quickly in my life,” said a bystander to sports radio and television broadcaster Ann Liguori.
Some women brought fancy bras that looked like bathing suits. Some went more causal favoring leggings, spaghetti strap T’s, trusting a stranger’s eye and a wing and a prayer to figure out what looks good.
Stars like a bargain just as much as the rest of us.
Kelly Ripa, one of the hostess of the event, was on hand. “The View’s” Joy Behar and Star Jones were in attendance. Nicole Murphy, Michael Strahan’s fiancé, was spotted walking out with couple of purchases. Cameron Silver, Edie Falco, Beth Ostrosky Stern, Zosia Mamet, and Diana Gruss, were all spotted on the red carpet. Designer Issac Mizrahi brought his best straw hat to the occasion. Kathy and Nicky Hilton came out for the cause, as did Jonathan Cheban, June Ambrose, Kim Raver, and Kelly Rutherford with her adorable dog Oliver.
Lisa Rinna was there interviewing for QVC. Never at a loss for words, she told Hamptons.com, “Most of the people I’m interviewing are my friends. I care a lot about curing ovarian cancer, and I love to shop.”
Rinna, who owned a clothing store in Sherman Oaks and now has her own QVC line, had provided one of her Belle Gray tops for the event. She’s an across-the board shopper, from high-end retail to bargains, but noted, “I’m a vintage girl.”
Shopping wasn’t the only entertainment. Lines formed at the Moroccan Oil tent to try products and have a new hairdo for the day. A fortuneteller was there to tell guests what their future may hold. Voss Water tents were stationed all over the benefit to make sure everyone kept hydrated in the July heat.
The full bar could disappoint no one, as well as the catered food service from Sant Ambroeus that offered a variety of gourmet sides to go along with the always pleasing hamburger, hotdog, of pizza. And if that wasn’t enough, the dessert bar was a perfect way to finish off the meal with a variety of delicious morsels like a key-lime tart, tiramisu, or some cool gelato.
Based on the busting boxes full of tickets to be picked from, it is safe to say that the raffle at the event was a success. With jewelry, handbags, Supra sneakers signed and worn by Justin Bieber, and much more, the winners walked away extremely happy.
When all was said and done, the field had been cleared, the last of the clothes purchased and collected, for many it felt like Christmas in July, and while watching people leave with their purchases it was a very merry Christmas. Funds rose for the cause were just extra icing on the already delicious cake.
