Whether one is deciding to go forward with a landscape architect/designer’s plan or, your own creative plan of adding stone work as part of your garden, is a big move. However, once you agree that introducing another organic element, such as stone to your home’s surroundings, you are on your way to adding 10% or more value to your home.

When I design stone pathways, entrances, porches, and seating walls for example, I always keep the human side in the forefront of my mind. One thing that I find awkward is when square blocks of blue stone are placed on the ground to create a path (for humans) in a straight line too far apart. What I am suggesting is that if you were about to use square shaped stepping stones consider the stride of an average person. If the stones are placed too far apart that only creates a challenge to coordinate your steps to their placement. Best to keep them closer than farther away from each other, it just flows better. Also, by being closer together the grass growing in between requires less weed whacking.
When planning a path, it is a good idea to have the path swerve if possible giving it a graceful line which is far more interesting than a straight line. Another thing that I suggest is to make sure that the stone path you are planning is wide enough. If your site allows for a four foot width stone entrance pathway to your front door you should consider doing it. A beautifully laid stone path always helps to anchor the house and give a grander impression and your family, friends, and surely potential buyers will notice and appreciate the gracious first impression of your home that you created.

Seating stone walls are extremely functional. I incorporate them where and when I can. Low walls create lots of extra seating during parties, and they require no stow away care when inclement weather is threatening. There are also no worries regarding storing additional seasonal seating furniture.
Surrounding a pool patio along with flanking gardens is striking. Again by anchoring the pool as a water element and introducing the soft sentient beauty of a garden coupled with the solid strength of stone is very impressive.
There is no question that by adding creative stone structures to your property and gardens the overall value of your home is elevated and kicked up several notches, and will continue to gain value. Stone walls, stone fountains, patios, porches and beautiful paths and beautiful gardens always make a successful and tasteful impression.
