Building a memorable brand online can be as simple as leading with intention, sharing your unique perspective, being your authentic selfโand sometimes, using lots of hairspray! So do you know the real you?
When people ask me about self-branding, I always say: Start by knowing who you are, and embrace your essence. Remember you only have the opportunity to make a first impression once. I read that people remember 25 percent of what you say and 75 percent of what you look like. So whether youโre stepping out for lunch or showing up online, make it count. Here are a few tips I have learned along the way.
– Lead With Purpose.
I never walk into a roomโor post on Instagramโwithout intention. Maybe itโs to inspire, delight, or educate. Know your โwhyโ before you show your โwhat.โ
– Be Your Authentic Self.
Self-branding isnโt just aestheticsโitโs values. Your values. Your perspective. Not copying others. Do people know what you stand for? What you care about? Tell your story. Thatโs what turns followers into fans.
– Donโt Just CreateโDocument.
Iโm not always โcreating content.โ Iโm living my lifeโand letting people come along for the ride. Thereโs a difference., and that also makes the creative process sustainable.
– Be a Little Predictable (In the Best Way).
People should know what to expect from you. Thatโs not boringโitโs iconic. Whether itโs a favorite phrase (ahem, โHey, itโs Suebelle in Palm Beachโ), a signature look, or your double espresso, repetition builds recognition. And recognition builds brand.
– Start.
Donโt wait to feel ready, donโt wait for perfect photos or the perfect plan. I started at 76, with my iPhone, my frosted pink lipstick, and something to say. If I can do it, so can you. The first post may not be perfect, but it will be yours. And thatโs enough.
So whether youโre building a business, a persona, or just the next version of you, remember, you donโt need to be everywhere, do everything, or appeal to everyone. Just show upโconfident, enthusiastic, consistentโand let the rest follow. Iconic doesnโt mean perfect. It just means true.
