“It’s different every year because of the art work,” said Theresa Murphy, a spokeswoman for the event. Thirteen years after the first round of artists were handed a plain box and asked to create a work of art, the tradition continues with donated wine and cigar boxes. This year’s 13th annual box art auction on Saturday, September 7, 2013, at The Ross School Center to benefit the East End Hospice, has garnered even more artists this year and serves as the hospice’s only fundraiser in East Hampton.
Prior to the actual auction, the boxes will be on display in Hoie Hall at St. Luke’s Church on Wednesday, August 28, 2013, and Thursday, 29, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a “Meet the Artists” event for the public that Wednesday.
Bonnie Grice, the producer and host of “Eclectic Café” and “This Song is You” on Peconic Public Broadcasting, will be chairing the live auction at 6:30 p.m. after the two and a half hour silent auction.
Hilaria and Alec Baldwin, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Conklin, Eric Fischl, April Gornik, Sheldon Harnick, Barbara Layton, Steven Long, Honorable Paul F. Rickenbach, Jr., Mercedes Ruehl and Susan Kennedy Zeller are all on the list as honorary committee members.
The proceeds from the box art auction will benefit The East End Hospice. At the Summer Gala, the organization revealed plans to build an eight-bed inpatient hospice facility which will enhance and broaden the scope of East End Hospice’s existing services.
