In 1988, curator Fred Dorfman rented a house on Deerfield Lane in Sag Harbor. Twenty-five years later and a new pavilion later, Dorfman is preparing to bring people into his Hamptons home to enjoy art in a different type of setting.
“I’m not setting up a business…” Dorfman said. “The last thing I want to do when I come out here is to work. I’m inviting people to see it in a comfortable homelike setting.”
His “gallery” incorporates selections to be features in his garage, in his pavilion, on screens and standing plainly on the floor. Using space inside and out, his idea is just to have fun in a homey setting with some nice art.
“What I want to do with this space is introduce something that is meaningful and different,” he said.
This first showing will feature artists that Dorfman has worked with in the past like Graham Gilmore whose “How to Build a Rolls Royce” will be featured in the garage and Alejandro Diaz, a statement that Dorfman believes is about an overload of communication. Two of the artists that will be featured deal with video algorithms.
Dorfman’s first showing on Friday, August 30, is by invitation-only but he does plan on throwing an open house on Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
