Gordon Stevenson has spent time in Southampton since his childhood, so it is only fitting that his work is displayed in Tripoli Gallery of Southampton. The artist’s first solo show at Tripoli is set to debut on Saturday, May 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. and run until Monday, June 16.
Titled “I Remember It Differently,” Stevenson’s show marks a change of artistic vision. The work for which he is famous puts colloquial sayings into a new perspective by painting the saying itself in a unique way. The artwork he will be debuting at the Southampton Gallery has a different focus. Stevenson’s new vision takes the form of cartoons.
“If you look at a cartoon as an adult rather than as a child you have a very different viewpoint on it,” explains Stevenson. “And these are my modern takes on the cartoons that were important to me as a child and moments that stand out in time in them.” His new work sheds light on the adult content found in cartoons with the use of “love-sick Von Fancy-esque humor.”
