Artists Janet Jennings, Anne Raymond, And Phyllis Hammond To Explore Light And Color

Color and Light, an exhibition of paintings by Janet Jennings and Anne Raymond, and sculpture by Phyllis Hammond, is slated to open at Suffolk County Community College’s Lyceum Gallery on Monday, January 29. The exhibit will be on view through Saturday, March 3, and feature works that capture the “progression of daylight on our east end landscape.”

Both painters, Jennings and Raymond, are located in East Hampton. In the medium of oil on canvas, the paintings capture the water, winter sky, and horizons of the East End. Some pieces are abstract while others depict an actual place. Hammond works with painted aluminum, bending the pliable metal and coating it with a bright-colored, heat-cured powder.

Jennings’ roots in Long Island art date back to the early eighties, having been a founding member of the Children’s Museum of the East End, which is located in Bridgehampton. She has taught at many locations on the island such as the Parrish Art Museum, Guild Hall, and the Art Barge. Her work has been exhibited in New York City, and she currently teaches painting out of her studio in East Hampton.

Raymond’s work is featured in collections New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and at an art museum in Texas. Her work was selected by the United States Department of State’s Art in Embassies Program to be displayed at the US Embassy in Cyprus. Raymond is a Texas native who studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

The sculptor of the exhibit, Hammond, is from Massachusetts and has over six decades of sculpting experience. Of her many accolades, one is the title of the first woman to study at the Kyoto City College of Fine Arts in Japan. Her work has been featured both nationally and internationally in Brazil, the Hamptons, New York City, Japan, Argentina, and Boston. Most recently, Hammond’s work was part of an outdoor sculpture exhibit at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza in New York City in 2017.

“There are a number of excellent artists here on Long Island,” Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay said. “Our college and its galleries create an opportunity to showcase one of the island’s best assets, its artists.”

An artists’ reception will be held on Wednesday, February 21 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Suffolk County Community College’s Lyceum Gallery is located at 121 Speonk-Riverhead Road in Riverhead. For more information or gallery hours, please call 631-548-2436 or visit sunysuffolk.edu.

  • Wölffer’s New Argentinian Malbec is Perfect for the Holiday Season

Christian Wölffer, former owner of Wölffer Estate Vineyards here in Sagaponack, New York, had always dreamt of owning a vineyard in Argentina one day. He wasn’t able to bring that dream to fruition before his death in 2008, but his children, Joey and Marc, have worked hard in the years following to make their father’s dream a reality.

After his father’s passing, Marc eventually bought 85 hectares of land in Mendoza, Argentina, a city in the Cuyo region that is also known as the heart of Argentinian Wine Country. Together with fellow winemaker Roman Roth and Susanna Balbo, the vineyard’s “Aida of Torrontes”, the Wölffer team has launched their newest Wine– the Finca Wölffer Malbec 2022, a rich and jammy Argentinian red. @wolfferwine

  • The Hamptons Power Couple Behind Heiberg Cummings Design

My afternoon with William Cummings and Bernt Heiberg, the venerable founders of the eponymous Heiberg Cummings Design, was fantastic and a fascinating reminder of how much energy and effort goes into the art of designing a truly remarkable home.

Having casual access to this much-celebrated creative team is a luxury, and Bill and Bernt are among the most approachable and kind people you’ll meet in the Hamptons. Not to mention their impeccable design taste. Together, they are beautifully balanced as an archetypal power couple—Bill as the head and Bernt as the Heart—driven by a shared love for and commitment to their craft. @heibergcummingsdesign
