INTERVIEW: Moody Blues Lead Singer And Wings Co-Founder Denny Laine Dishes On Spending Time On The East End, The Universal Language Of Music, And More

On Saturday, March 2, Denny Laine, a founding member of the Moody Blues and of Paul McCartney’s band, Wings, will be performing solo at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor. In an interview exclusively for Hamptons.com, Laine said about the upcoming gig, “It will be a bit of everything, with my songs and storytelling.”

Laine, actually born Brian Frederick Hines in Birmingham, England on October 29, 1944, said how the show is sort of a full circle. He explains, “My first show was when I was 12, I was up on the stage solo, with my parents in the crowd very proud.” Then Laine went on to say for that show he was playing, “A used Levin guitar that I paid about four English pounds for ($5.17 USA).” He first learned to play his brother’s ukulele teaching himself the chords. “Back then during and after the war George Formby, an actor, singer, and comedian was big in England with the ukulele.” Denny expanded the thought, “We were poor and I wanted to make something of my life. Later in school I formed a skiffle band.” And then he was on his way.

The musician reminisced about when Wings, the Paul McCartney band he founded with Paul and Linda in 1971, opened up the Seattle Kingdom. He fondly recalls, “We were the first act to play there with 80,000 people. They had someone literally flying a glider inside. Later on, the stadiums and crowds actually became larger.” But Laine prefers to play in theater venues like Bay Street, because as he says, they have, “… comfortable seats and usually good acoustics.”

He spent last New Year’s in Montauk and when I asked about Linda McCartney, he had a fond memory of coming out to the East End years back and spending a day with Linda, Paul, and Linda’s father, Lee Eastman, at his property in East Hampton. “I played football (soccer) on a field around the house with the kids,” he said, “while they all played tennis.”

Laine, who has traveled the world, loves listening to guitar players. Like his life-long friend Eric Clapton, Laine still listens to and enjoys American blues singer and songwriter Robert Johnson. He explained, “I am a guitar player, I don’t listen to songs, like Eric [Clapton] I like to listen to guitar players. I love finding great stuff on YouTube.” He went to say how music is a “universal language,” and he was gifted somehow and right from that first solo performance at 12-years-old he knew his life as a musician “was meant to be.”

He didn’t really remember much about his first recording experience other then, “It was with a band while still in high school and the drummer was Bev Bevan (who went on to drum for the Electric Light Orchestra). We made an acetate disc of a few demo songs.”

For the last two to three years Denny has been living in the NYC area. He has also recently lived in L.A. and in Massachusetts. He says he likes the availability of the “action,” of New York. However, he did confess that all musicians are of perhaps a large family brotherhood that belongs to all music lovers throughout the world. Or as Keith Richards once said about where he lives, he answered, “I live everywhere.”

Luckily for East End music lovers, Denny will be at Bay Street Theater on Saturday, March 2 to tell his story intermittently through his music and life experience. It will be a warm wonderful evening with a rock music icon. His Moody Blues hit song, Go Now, still gets mega airtime streaming on the internet and on radio. Denny Laine is promising a great night of song, stories, laughs and enjoyment. In closing he said, “Music is the perfect release from stress.”

The concert will begin at 8 p.m. and tickets are $35.

Bay Street is located at 1 Bay Street. For more information, call 631-725-9500 or visit www.baystreet.org.

  • Nancy Atlas Returns to Bay Street Theater by Popular Demand

The iconic Nancy Atlas will be returning to Bay Street on October 7th at 8 pm. For over the last twenty years, this prolific songwriter, entertainer, mother, and community leader has been a stalwart presence on the East End, helping others often while perhaps neglecting her own needs.

For her fans, the last twenty-plus years of great shows have gone by quickly, but so has the journey of real life. She responded to this notion by saying, “I am glad (folks) remember it sweetly! It’s a mire of thorns and roses for sure. The best parenting advice I ever received actually came from Little Anthony (Speck in the Sea), who told us to pull our kids closer when they are going through rough patches and, shall we say, making the wrong decision. And when I say that, I don’t mean it with rose-colored glasses. We get into the thick of it with them and try to guide them through it. This generation has a lot to navigate, and I actually sympathize with them. Snapchat. Pandemics. They’ve been handed a full deck of cards as young adults.” @nancyatlas @baystreettheater

  • Enjoy the Warmth of Community This Fall at LongHouse

LongHouse Reserve is unbelievably beautiful. Whether you’re here for the summer or visiting from out of town, LongHouse is a must-visit. It’s not just a place for art but a true community hub offering tranquility and a chance to marvel at nature’s wonders. It’s a sanctuary of peace.

This fall, there’s a buzz in the air, thanks to the efforts of LongHouse director Carrie Rebora Barratt, who is a relatively new local herself. She’s been working to create more engaging community events and has extended LongHouse’s open season well into the fall and possibly even the winter. @longhousereserve

  • The place is the old Astro’s, and it looks pretty much the same except all the seating is now by the windows, and there are no tables. You can go in for slices, and overall, it’s a pretty typical pizza joint with a more retro vibe. But what’s great about this pizza is that it is thin and has a crispness to it that you don’t get anywhere else in the Hamptons. This means that even if you devour half a pie, you don’t walk away feeling bloated and like death is imminent, but you just feel really full from good pizza.

Everything is fresh, and the overall vibe is trendy. You have to go. I gave it an 8.4. #pizza #pizzatime #pizzalover #hamptons #finipizza
  • Special Screening of Love…Reconsidered, A Hamptons-Based Romantic Comedy

The Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center will be hosting a premiere of the film Love…Reconsidered on Saturday, September 30th at 7:00 p.m. in the Mollie Parnis Auditorium. This is the charming romantic comedy starring Sophie von Haselberg, Judy Gold, Marisa Ryan, Elaine Bromka, Luke Gulbranson, and Colton Haynes, set between New York City and Southampton.

Love…Reconsidered is based on Arielle Haller-Silverstone’s true love/life story, and she wrote the screenplay after losing her job during the pandemic where she then moved to the Hamptons. Haller-Silverstone is the co-owner of Le Closet, a curated consignment store, with locations in Southampton and New York City, and she can’t wait to premiere this film at WHBPAC and connect with viewers.

The screening will also include a panel discussion with the filmmakers moderated by Kate Schumacher and Carinn Jade of the well-known podcast Pop Fiction Women. They will dive into the film’s characters and the complicated lives they lead, along with the filmmaking process that brought this movie to life on the screen. Arielle Haller-Silverstone spoke more about her inspiration for the screenplay, her background, and what she is most looking forward to for the screening.

Congratulations on your film Love…Reconsidered. Can you talk about the story behind this film and where your inspiration came from to write the screenplay?

Arielle Haller-Silverstone: I lost my job during COVID and started Le Closet from my studio apartment in Hell’s Kitchen. On a total whim, my dad knew a broker that knew a broker in Southampton, and I decided to give it a shot. I schlepped all of the clothes from NYC and opened on Windmill Lane (where the store still is today!). I knew there was a script within this story and had to make a movie. @whbpac
