The Perfect Match

What couple doesn’t want to look better together? But taking two individual personal styles and making them blend isn’t always easy. Here are five simple ways to create a stunning duo!

We blinked and it’s July 4th weekend already. Summer is well underway and that means all the couples you know are stepping out in style. So how do two people in a relationship figure out their style as a pair? It takes work. When I met my husband, Steven, he was still wearing vests and flip-flops. Here are some ways that we were able to blend our styles together.

1. Compare your color palettes.

Steven and I both share a rising sign in Virgo. Your rising sign typically dictates how you dress. Because we have this in common, we’re both into muted colors. Bold colors are not really our thing. Your style as a couple reflects both of your individual tastes, so to begin I would hone in on what your go-to outfits are as an individual, then see how they translate to a couple.

2. Reflect where you are.

Our style can change drastically from being in Europe, to the Hamptons, to New York City, and beyond. If you’re in Europe, the linens are obviously coming out. But if you’re in NYC, maybe you’re wearing more black. It’s so important to try everything on ahead of a trip so that you know exactly how it will look and how you will complement each other.

3. Never underestimate a mood board.

Men especially are usually visual. They’re visual with choosing a partner, and they’re visual when it comes to what to wear. If you’re attending an upcoming event, let’s say a destination wedding, it definitely doesn’t hurt to make a mood board with the vibe that you’re going for as a team. Pinterest can be your best friend.

4. Out with the old, in with the new.

When my husband and I first moved in together, we were finally able to take inventory of all the junk we were holding on to. So many clothing items for both of us were collecting dust and hadn’t been worn in years. When you’re creating your own space together, it’s important to focus on pieces that you want to bring with you into your future, not random items that are connected to your past.

5. Put someone in charge.

This is a generalization, but most couples aren’t made up of two stylish people. There’s usually one person who has a good sense of style, and another who doesn’t really care or think about that. Identify who has the better fashion sense and allow that person some free reign. You have to trust that you’ll be in good hands with the partner you choose. Then, you can go shopping together and they can guide your couple style in a direction that you both love.
