Hamptons.com Launches New Live Stream Camera On Shelter Island At South Ferry

Hamptons.com is pleased to announce an exciting addition to our live stream cameras. In addition to the existing cameras located at Cooper’s Beach, Main Beach and at the corner of Route 39A, the new camera will be located on Shelter Island at the South Ferry providing an opportunity for locals and visitors to view the multiple daily crossings to and fro between Shelter Island and North Haven.

The popular and frequently viewed live cameras attract viewers from around the world, and offer everyone the opportunity to keep an eye on what’s happening in our area from both our roads and beaches. We hear from many viewers who rely on the cameras to track beach conditions, local weather and traffic, or who are simply delighted to watch the soothing sight of peaceful ocean waves.

Given the long history the South Ferry has in the Hamptons, and the popularity of the Hamptons.com live stream cameras, this is, in the words of South Ferry Chief of Operations, Nicholas Morehead, a “win-win for everyone involved.”

A Bit of History on the South Ferry from the South Ferry Book:

These are just a few of the notable accomplishments and some background on the South Ferry as compiled by Captains Clifford D. Clark, John Clark, Don Loper and Phil Dunne, and edited by Captain Glenn W. Waddington.

The original ferry was founded in the 1700’s by Samuel Clark as a service for travelers from Shelter Island to Greenport. After selling the business and settling on Shelter Island, Clark began another row-boat service from his land to North Haven. Both of Clark’s sons, Samuel and David, took over the business, however, later going their separate ways, David remained and expanded the business in the late 1800’s to include a car boat that towed cargo, as well as horses and carriages.

Following David’s unfortunate death from pneumonia, his son, Clifford, kept the business afloat and continued to expand the fleet. Although incorporated in 1906, the business still remains in the family, and history was made that year as well when the first gasoline powered passenger vessel in the region was launched.

Captain C.Y. Clark took the business through both World Wars and the Great Depression, adding more vessels, and again made history by building stanchions with no overhead obstructions, a practice used widely by ferry vessels to this day. Adding diesel powered vessels in the 1940’s, C.Y.’s two sons, Donald H. and William Y., fourth generation Clarks, joined the business. William’s sons, Gilbert and Eugene also joined the business, along with Clifford D. Clark. The family business remains in the hands of fifth generation Clarks to this day.

South Ferry’s Morehead, who enthusiastically declared his and the company’s pleasure regarding the camera installation, revealed, “We see this as an advantage for not only passengers, but for employees as well. Everyone will be able to get a sense of what is happening across the bay, see the conditions, and we also get to see what is going on in our parking lot!”

Continuing, Morehead stated, “We are happy to be part of the wonderful service Hamptons.com offers us all with their cameras, and we at South Ferry feel the community will be very happy with the arrangement.”
