Hamptons JazzFest presents Trio Libre at The Church in Sag Harbor — a vibrant evening of jazz and Afro-Latin music from one of the most distinctive and intimate ensemble concepts in contemporary music.
Trio Libre is a project by Latin Grammy Award-winning percussionist and composer Samuel Torres, featuring a deliberately minimalist instrumentation of congas, piano, and vibraphone. The ensemble explores a stripped-down approach to jazz and Afro-Latin music through rhythm, texture, and improvisation — developed as a contrast to larger ensemble formats, focusing on the sonic clarity and deep musical interaction that comes from reduced forces.
Colombian-born and Brooklyn-based, Samuel Torres is a Latin Grammy Award winner known for his work across jazz, Latin, and classical music. He is joined by pianist Carmen Staaf and vibraphonist Felipe Fournier — together building a sound rooted in Afro-Latin rhythmic tradition and contemporary jazz improvisation.
