Whitney Houston And Laird Hamilton Documentaries Among HIFF’s SummerDocs Films

This summer, Hamptons International Film Festival’s (HIFF) 9th annual SummerDocs series will return to present a seriously impressive lineup of new and trailblazing documentary filmmaking.

“It’s HIFF’s 25th anniversary year and the ninth season of SummerDocs and we have a great lineup of documentary films, featuring intense drama and more entertaining fare,” shared Hamptons International Film Festival Co-Chairman and SummerDocs series presenter Alec Baldwin. “Artistic Director David Nugent and I believe this will be one of the best SummerDoc seasons yet.”

SummerDocs will launch with Netflix’s Nobody Speak: Hulk Hogan, Gawker and Trials of a Free Press, a captivating documentary that shines a spotlight on what happens when the country’s free press goes too far, exploring the trial between Hulk Hogan and Gawker Media, on Saturday, July 8.

The series will continue on Saturday, July 29 with The Orchard and CNN Films’ Trophy, which takes a look at the devastating impact of big-game hunting on endangered African species like elephants, rhinos and lions, as well as breeding and wildlife conservation.

Both July screenings will be held at Guild Hall in East Hampton at 7 p.m.

IFC’s Take Every Wave: The Life of Laird Hamilton is next up. On Friday, August 4 at 8:30 p.m., head to Gurney’s in Montauk to learn more about the iconic big wave surfer with never-before-seen archival footage of Hamilton mixed with contemporary verité footage shot in Southern California, Bermuda and Kaua.

Showtime’s Whitney: Can I Be Me can be seen at the Southampton Arts Center in Southampton pn Thursday, August 17 at 7 p.m. Documentarian Nick Broomfield and iconic music video director Rudi Dolezal trace the life of icon Whitney Houston, presenting a never-before-seen backstage look at Houston’s stardom.

SummerDocs will wrap up with Icarus on Saturday, August 26 at 7 p.m. at Guild Hall in East Hampton. The Netflix documentary explores the Russian doping scandal, which placed Russian Scientist Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov at the center of Russia’s shocking state-sponsored Olympic doping program.

After each screening, HIFF Co-Chairman Alec Baldwin and HIFF Artistic Director David Nugent will welcome some of the filmmakers and subjects for a conversation about the featured film. Expected guests include Director Brian Knappenberger and special guests for Nobody Speak: Hulk Hogan, Gawker and Trials of a Free Press, Directors Christina Clusiau and Shaul Schwarz for Trophy, Director Rory Kennedy and subject Laird Hamilton for Take Every Wave: The Life of Laird Hamilton, Director Nick Broomfield for Whitney: Can I Be Me, and Director Bryan Fogel for Icarus.

Additionally, HIFF will continue its 25 Years 25 Films series with screenings of The Cove at Guild Hall on Sunday, June 25, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly at MoMA in New York City on Thursday, June 29, and Hook at the YMCA East Hampton on Friday, June 30.

July will feature Sita Sings the Blues at the YMCA East Hampton on Friday, July 7, Independence Day at Southampton Arts Center on Friday, July 7, Back to the Future at the YMCA East Hampton on Friday, July 14, Slumdog Millionaire at Southampton Arts Center on Friday, July 14, 20 Feet from Stardom at Gurney’s on Sunday, July 16, Still Alice at Southampton Arts Center on Thursday, July 20, Atlantis at the YMCA East Hampton on Friday, July 21, Young Frankenstein at Southampton Arts Center on Friday, July 21, The Fountain at Mandala Yoga in Amagansett on Wednesday, July 26, Life Animated at the YMCA East Hampton on Friday, July 28, and Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds at Southampton Arts Center on Friday, July 28.

August will bring viewings of Little Shop of Horrors at YMCA East Hampton on Friday, August 4, Airplane at Southampton Arts Center on Friday, August 4, Searching for Sugar Man at The Surf Lodge in Montauk on Sunday, August 6, Jumanji at the YMCA East Hampton on Friday, August 11, The Artist at Southampton Arts Center on Friday, August 11, Open Water at Gurney’s in Montauk on Sunday, August 13, Addams Family Values at the YMCA East Hampton on Friday, August 18, The Princess Bride at Southampton Arts Center on Friday, August 18, Spirited Away at the YMCA East Hampton on Friday, August 25, Remember the Titans at Southampton Arts Center on Friday, August 25, and Pollock at Guild Hall East Hampton on Wednesday, August 30.

The series will wrap up in September with Whale Rider at the YMCA East Hampton on Friday, September 1, Jaws at Southampton Arts Center on Friday, September 1, Close Encounters of the Third Kind at the YMCA East Hampton on Friday, September 8, West Side Story at the YMCA East Hampton on Friday, September 15, and The ‘Burbs at the YMCA East Hampton on Friday, September 22.
